Target: Donald N. Blake, President of the Virginia Christian Alliance
Goal: Stop campaign to get public schools to treat transgender students as seriously mentally ill.
Transgender students in Virginia are being given too many accommodations in public schools, according to the anti-LGBT Virginia Christian Alliance. As a result, the group has launched a statewide campaign to roll back protections for transgender students. Demand that the Virginia Christian Alliance abandon this campaign at once.
Amid claims that public schools in Virginia are being bullied into accepting transgender students by the federal government’s misuse of its Title IX policy, the Virginia Christian Alliance has issued a brief to the state’s many school boards demanding that they begin to treat “transgenderism activity” in their schools as “a serious medical mental disorder.” The group announced that it has partnered with a national conservative legal think tank to fight the federal government’s legal approach to advancing transgender protections and is set to distribute an alternative transgender student school policy to Virginia’s schools in the coming days.
Alarmingly, the Virginia Christian Alliance has stated that it plans to take this legal crusade against transgender student accommodations nationwide, and that it considers this initial push in Virginia to be nothing but “ground zero.” Sign the petition below to demand that this group end this hateful campaign at once.
Dear President Blake,
I am writing you today regarding your organization’s recently-launched campaign to fight transgender student accommodations in Virginia’s schools. This push is dangerous and directly puts the health and wellbeing of countless transgender students at risk.
Your group’s assertion that transgender people are suffering from a mental disorder is inconsistent with professional psychological and medical opinion. Given that your group, according to your own website, focuses more on promoting a “Biblical” view of things than a scientific one, please excuse me if I side with the scientific establishment on this matter—transgender identities, and other nonbinary gender identities, are not mental disorders. That’s the scientific consensus, regardless of one’s own personal beliefs.
Because the United States is a country that is barred from having an established religion, it follows that matters of public policy be founded on sound, impartial science—not religious texts. Your efforts to reign in the treatment of transgender students in Virginia’s schools to be in line with your organization’s particular religious worldview are inappropriate and irrelevant.
Government policy, our laws, and the way our public schools treat their students cannot be based on religious ideology, period. It’s as simple as that. I demand that you and the Virginia Christian Alliance end this campaign at once.
