Viral Video of Cop Shooting Family Dog Shows Need to Properly Train Police

rottweiler by Dr. Manfred Herrmann Allgemeiner

Target: Pasco, Florida Sheriff’s Department

Demand: Come up with other solutions for officer safety than killing dogs.

In a recent video of a police officer arriving at a house responding to a silent alarm, the viewer can see the police officer jump the fence into the back yard. Then, two dogs approach the officer. The officer takes out his gun and shoots one of the dogs who can then be heard yelping in pain. The owner then comes out of the house and tells the officer to shoot the dog to put him out of his misery.

This type of situation was avoidable and unfortunate. Of course the officer had to avoid being attacked, but there should have been another solution. The owner says the gate was unlocked and the officer could have driven down the driveway. Therefore, the officer should have been more diligent in ensuring there was another way onto the property before ending the dog’s life.

Dear Pasco, Florida Sheriff’s Department,

The video of one of your deputies shooting a dog after jumping a fence has gone viral. Although we understand the officer felt he was in danger, there must be other ways of getting into a property without killing animals. The dogs were simply doing what they were trained to do.

Dogs are members of families and must be regarded as such. Please train your officers to handle situations without killing them.
