Stop Promoting Offensive Native American Stereotypes in New Movie

Target: Actor, Writer, and Producer Adam Sandler

Goal: Stop the reinforcement of offensive stereotypes against Native Americans in new movie.

Recently several Native American actors walked off of the set of the movie The Ridiculous 6 because of the racist stereotypes in the script. The movie written by, produced by, and featuring Adam Sandler had Native American characters with names like “Beaver’s Breath” and “No Bra.” Featuring offensive stereotypes through the media in this way promotes racist thinking and a negative, inaccurate portrayal of Native American culture regardless the film’s comedic intent.

The crew of the questionably appropriate film hired a Native American cultural consultant in efforts to provide a more accurate portrayal of Native Americas. However, many Native American actors and the consultant himself walked off the set because they argued the script was still extremely offensive and inaccurate.

With Native Americans being underrepresented in the media already, it becomes extremely problematic when they are portrayed inaccurately. Unfortunately, many Native American actors continue to take these offensive, demeaning roles for money.

Those involved in the production of media communicated with the masses need to be more aware of the consequences and negative messages sent out through offensive, racist stereotypes. Awareness needs to be spread so that those with the power of influence can stop these negative portrayals. The Native American culture deserves to be displayed accurately through the media. Act now to ask the writers and producers to reconsider these racist portrayals before the movie is released.

Dear Mr. Sandler,

Comedy films are important to lift the spirits of the public, however they do not need to come at the expense of the exploitation of a particular racial group. With the recent controversy arising after several Native American actors walked off of the set of the upcoming movie The Ridiculous 6, the public became more aware of the racist stereotypes displayed in the movie.

Native Americans are seriously underrepresented in the media. In many films, including this particular parody, they are portrayed in a negative light. With Native Americans having characters names like “Beaver’s Breath” and “No Bra,” the actors’ rage is understandable.

While these jokes are intended to be funny, these negative, racist messages only help to reinforce racism in society. Racist jokes and inaccurate depictions of an entire culture become normalized, yet many Native American actors must take these roles to make a living.

Please consider rewriting the script and racist jokes in The Ridiculous 6. Standing up against this racism would have a huge impact on intercultural relations and Native American depictions through movies. I encourage you to act now.
