Target: Mr. Barack Obama, President of the United States of America
Goal: Stop sneaky reauthorization of provisions that allow the warrantless spying.
A deceitful push has been made to extend the provision that makes federal government spying powers legal just as it seemed they were going to be reined in. Several congressmen have attempted to sneak a last-minute bill into Congress that would allow the mass collection of private data from U.S. citizens until the end of 2020. Something must be done to stop this subterfuge in order to uphold the right to privacy in the United States.
There can be no doubt that this is an underhanded attempt by members of the intelligence community to ensure that no major reforms concerning the mass collection of private data are made. The sponsors of the bill, House Majority leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr, have consistently acted to protect the National Security Agency and other agencies that routinely collect citizens’ private information. They both also stand to gain if the current system remains in place.
The justification that these spying measures are put in place to keep people safe is starting to wear thin and the American people are starting to realize just how little privacy they have. The time to reclaim that privacy is now and the best way to do it is by reforming the Patriot Act, which contains the provisions that allows this spying, as soon as possible. The provision in question was due to expire in just over a month’s time, but this extension could promise years of violated privacy to come. Sign here to demand that this bill be vetoed by the President should it get passed through Congress.
Dear President Obama,
It has come to my attention that a group of congressmen is attempting to reauthorize a very specific part of the U.S. Patriot act that would allow agencies of the federal government to spy on U.S. citizens until the end of 2020. The provision in question, number 215, is due to expire in just over a month, but it seems that several members of the intelligence community do not want reforms to take place.
The excuse that the spying programs of the NSA are in place to protect people is starting to wear thin and the American people are starting to wake up and get angry. In the immortal words of Benjamin Franklin, “Those who sacrifice Liberty for Security deserve neither.”
For this reason, I am writing to demand that if any bill trying to force a reauthorization of provision 215 of the Patriot Act should make it to your desk, you veto it without hesitation.
