Target: His Holiness Pope Francis
Goal: Prevent a member of the Vatican from speaking at an upcoming anti-LGBT rally.
Pope Francis must prevent Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò from speaking at an anti-LGBT rally and undoing the Pope’s message of understanding and love. The Pope and the Catholic church have been very progressive in igniting discussions on equality within the church and making room for those who have a religious heart and also identify as gay, lesbian, transgender or bisexual. But having one of the Pope’s representatives speak at a very openly aggressive forum for hatred and gay bashing sends a mixed message to the religious community worldwide.
The group holding the rally is called the National Organization for Marriage, or NOM for short. You may have heard of their antics against the LGBT community’s fight for equality and they are still not stopping their grotesque acts. This group has been very verbal in their attacks on marriage equality and are clearly not advocates for progressive change, understanding, or any of the values held dear by Pope Francis. The rally will take place on April 25, 2015 so it’s very important that we send the Pope a strong message and do it fast.
“There is absolutely no room for an emissary of one of the world’s great religions at an event that will espouse hate and bigotry and promote outright discrimination against LGBT Americans and their families,” said Human Rights Campaign Vice President of Communications Fred Sainz.
Sign this petition to encourage Pope Francis to stop his archbishop from going through with his speech at a very hostile anti-LGBT rally.
Dear Pope Francis,
It has come to my attention that a member of the Vatican is speaking at an anti-LGBT rally. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò will speak on April 25, 2015 at the National Organization for Marriage’s “Marriage for Marriage” rally. This group has a history of spreading anti-gay propaganda and hateful words to members of the LGBT community.
Your administration has demonstrated great compassion and understanding to the LGBT movement, helping gay Christians feel more welcomed in the church. Please do not undo all this great work. This archbishop, if allowed to speak, will send a very mixed message as to your church’s stance and feelings on the LGBT community. You are a worldwide symbol and the decisions your ambassadors make reflect your feelings as well.
The bigotry that this group spreads does not need to be tied to or associated with the Vatican in any way. Please help ensure that your many believers of faith continue to follow your example of kindness and understanding by preventing Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò from speaking to this discriminatory group.
