Target: Ion Baleanu, candidate for Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District school board
Goal: Stop alleged Islamophobic man from getting position on school board.
Muslims are “barbarians” who must be forced back to “where they come from,” according to comments reportedly made by Bridgewater, Massachusetts regional school board candidate Ion Baleanu. People who hold such hateful prejudices should not have any authority over the education of our country’s children. Demand that Baleanu drop out of the race for a seat on the school board.
According to recent reports, Baleanu, who is running in a three-way race for one of two positions on Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District’s managing board, has a history of offensive and violent online remarks about Muslims. He has allegedly repeatedly called for the “annihilation” of Muslims, argued that they are “barbarians” and should be forced back to the “seventh century,” and raised alarm over the lies that schools are being “forced” to recognize Muslim holidays and are proselytizing Islam to students.
When faced with criticism for these comments by his opponents and regular citizens alike, Baleanu refused to back down, citing freedom of speech and saying that we have to “fight fire with fire” against “these people.” While Baleanu certainly has a right to freedom of speech, that right also obliges him to deal with the social consequences of that speech.
The school district Baleanu is trying to get a seat on serves students from all kinds of cultural and religious backgrounds—outright bigotry against some of these backgrounds should disqualify him from office. Sign the petition below to demand that Baleanu drop out of the race for the school board seat over his prejudice.
Dear Mr. Baleanu,
I am writing you today regarding the comments you allegedly made about Muslims on various online social media accounts. Your remarks were bigoted, and are much more than any community should have to deal with from their own representatives.
Students who attend schools in the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District come from all kinds of different cultural, social, and religious backgrounds. Statistically, it is more likely than not that some of those students are Muslims themselves. Your belief that Muslims are savages, that they are forcing their religion onto American students, and that they must be “annihilated” casts doubt on your competency to help run a diverse and inclusive system of schools.
Many have already called on you to drop out of the race in the wake of your comments coming to light. Given these alleged prejudices of yours, the request is not inappropriate. I demand that you drop out of the race for the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District seat at once.
