Target: Ms. Linda T. Sanchez, Ranking Member of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Ethics
Goal: Investigate congressman who is romantically involved with a lobbyist of his committee.
A member of the House of Representatives has a romantic relationship with a lobbyist that consistently tries to influence the committee he is a part of. The congressman, Republican Bill Shuster from Pennsylvania, is the chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. The lobbyist, Shelley Rubino, works for an airline organization. This situation seems more than a little suspicious and a full investigation must be launched into the nature of their relationship.
The star-crossed lovers claim that their relationship is strictly personal and does not overlap with their professional lives at all, but how could it not? While Ms. Rubino does not directly lobby Congressman Shuster, or his office, she lobbies other members of his committee regularly.
While the two may not be breaking any laws in particular, this relationship stinks of corruption. There is no possible way that Congressman Shuster’s position, as chairman of a committee that is directly involved with aviation regulations, does not benefit Ms. Rubino and vice versa.
Congressman Shuster claims that he has consulted legal counsel and ensured that he is breaking no laws but that is not enough. There are innumerable ways that the two could helping each other in their various positions. Sign here to demand that the Congressional Committee on Ethics launch a full investigation of the nature of their relationship and ensure that there is no graft taking place.
Dear Congresswoman Sanchez,
It has come to my attention that there may be some political corruption taking place in the House of Representatives and I am writing to demand that your committee investigate it before it can be covered up.
Recently, it became public that Congressman Bill Shuster is romantically involved with a lobbyist that directly lobbies the committee he is the chairman of. While the lobbyist, Ms. Shelley Rubino, may not directly lobby Shuster or his office, she is free to lobby any other members of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. They claim that this relationship is entirely personal and does not overlap into their professional lives, but how could it not?
Every decision they make and every fundraiser they attend is done with the full knowledge that they could be benefiting each other. I refuse to believe that Congressman Shuster’s position in no way benefits Ms. Rubino just as I refuse to believe that Ms. Rubino’s position does not benefit Congressman Shuster. Please investigate this matter immediately and thoroughly.
