Target: Adidas CEO, Herbert Hainer
Goal: Praise Adidas for its efforts to reduce plastic waste in our oceans.
Adidas announced recently that it plans to make shoes and clothing using plastic garbage from the ocean and phase out plastic bags as soon as possible.
The clothing company is partnering with Parley for the Oceans, a group of scientists, artists, designers, and musicians who are dedicated to cleaning up our oceans. Adidas and Parley for the Oceans will be working together to create fibers from the plastic garbage found in oceans.
Adidas has been slowly becoming more sustainable since 2014, when they sourced 30 percent of their cotton from more sustainable sources. According to their 2014 Sustainability Report, they actually exceeded their goal by 5 percent. They hope to source 100 percent of cotton from sustainable sources by 2018.
Our oceans are filled with plastic debris and studies have shown that there are about 600 pieces of plastic in the ocean for every person living on earth. Plastic garbage in our oceans is only expected to increase if we don’t implement proper waste disposal techniques. According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), over 250 marine species are harmed by the garbage debris floating in our oceans.
Our planet’s oceans need to be kept clean and Adidas is doing its part to help the cause. Please sign the petition below and thank Adidas for making its stores more sustainable.
Dear Mr. Herbert Hainer,
I would like to thank you for your decision to make Adidas a more sustainable store. The move to use plastic garbage from our oceans to create clothes and shoes will greatly help clean up our oceans.
In addition, the plan to phase out plastic bags from your 2,900 stores is a notable and worthy goal that will help the planet. Your partnership with Parley for the Oceans is a fantastic decision that will no doubt see benefits through boosted sales and a cleaner environment.
Many marine species are harmed through the entanglement or ingestion of plastic garbage debris in the ocean. Everyone needs to do their part to cut down on this waste. It is wonderful to know that your company cares about this serious issue and that you continue to create goals that will help the environment.
Lessening the impact of your manufacturing sites is a strategy that all clothing and shoe stores should be implementing. Thank you for your efforts to help clean up the ocean and become a more sustainable company.
