Praise Officer Who Refused to Shoot Violent Suspect

Target: Officer Jesse Kidder, New Richmond Police Department

Goal: Applaud officer for his calm de-escalation of a potentially deadly situation.

A police officer in New Richmond, Ohio recently refused to use deadly force against a murder suspect who was lunging at him in an attempt to provoke a shooting. Rookie officer Jesse Kidder was the first to arrive to the scene of a double murder, where he was confronted by 27-year-old Michael Wilcox, who began to charge him and yell erratically. Despite the danger, the level-headed Kidder backed away from the suspect and was able to subdue him in a nonviolent manner. According to Iraq veteran Kidder, he wanted to be “absolutely sure” that the use of deadly force was necessary before using it.

The officer’s actions show a stark contrast with the flurry of media coverage concerning the over-use of police violence in America. Recently in South Carolina, an officer was fired and charged with murder after shooting a fleeing suspect several times in the back, while only moths ago another officer in New York City escaped indictment for killing a man with a prohibited chokehold. According to FBI statistics, more than 400 people are killed by police each year.

Rather than shooting a threatening suspect, this officer showed restraint and proficiency at his job by de-escalating the situation and apprehending the suspect in a nonviolent manner. Officer Kidder displayed a calm, rational thought process and demonstrated a respect for his oath to protect citizens. Sign the petition below to applaud this officer’s actions, which have set a positive example for police in his department and across America.

Dear Officer Jesse Kidder,

Due to a refreshing display of restraint by a police officer, a suicidal suspect has come out of a violent confrontation with his life. Recently, while trying to apprehend a violent murder suspect, you refused to use deadly force on a man who was lunging in your direction. Despite the man’s erratic behavior, you displayed sound judgement and a respect for life by apprehending him in a nonviolent manner.

Almost every week, the mainstream media reports another case of the use of deadly force against civilians. Your actions not only saved a life, but will set a positive example of rational situation assessment for other officers as well as help restore the community’s trust in law enforcement. We, the undersigned, applaud your efforts to uphold the true duties of a police officer.
