Target: Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson
Goal: Applaud plans to make Vancouver the largest city run on renewable resources.
Mayor Gregor Robertson made a commitment to the planet’s environment by pledging that Vancouver will now take strides toward 100 percent renewable energy use. This makes Vancouver the largest city to make such a pledge to date after his motion for a green city was approved by the Vancouver city council.
Cleaner cities are not just an American goal, but a global issue as the polar ice caps continue to melt at an astounding rate. The U.N. cites that cities contribute about 70 percent of the world’s greenhouse gasses. That number will not subside unless cities are willing to take the initiative to make serious changes. Vancouver has already made strides with their hydropower panels providing 90 percent of the city’s electric needs, but the real challenge will come from breaking free from gas and diesel.
Robertson projects that the city will be 100 percent energy efficient in about 40 years or less and that his city-wide pledge is actually a message to leaders all around the world.
“Cities around the world must show continued leadership to meet the urgent challenge of climate change, and the most impactful change we can make is a shift toward 100 percent of our energy being derived from renewable sources,” said Robertson.
We are all citizens of Earth. Every city that changes to protect the environment is a step toward a cleaner future, ensuring a long healthy life for our planet. Sign this petition to applaud Vancouver’s mayor for his valiant promise of a 100 percent green city.
Dear Mayor Robertson,
Thank you for your commitment toward transforming Vancouver into a 100 percent energy efficient city. Vancouver is the largest city to date to make such a valiant pledge, adding it to a growing list of forward thinking trendsetters.
According to the U. N., cities account for up to 70 percent of greenhouse gasses. That astonishing number needs to change before it is too late, as the polar ice caps are melting faster and faster each year. The steps you take now ensure that we will have a better, fresher tomorrow and it is leadership from people like you that inspires change and encourages others to follow.
It is my belief that the world will take note of the great changes you have declared for your city and follow in your footsteps. Thank you again for being a bringer of change.
