Praise Student for Defending Gender Equality

Target: Clermont Northeastern Middle School Student Sophie

Goal: Thank Sophie for defending feminism after discouraging actions from her school.

Recently, 8th grade student Sophie’s school picture was altered to remove a word the school’s principal believed to be too controversial: feminist. The teen was outraged and believed the alteration to be an act against her freedom of expression. Instead of passively accepting the principal’s decision, Sophie decided to fight against it and promote feminism within her school.

The school’s dress code prohibits any clothing with words or logos that may contain hate, profanity, or negative messages. With feminism being a positive term for women’s rights and gender equality, her t-shirt did not go against any school policies.

It is society that is responsible for assigning and reinforcing a negative stereotype on the word feminism. Feminist ideals are often falsely associated with hatred against men. However, Sophie insists and works towards affirming that feminism isn’t offensive but rather a term that supports gender equality. When public institutions like Clermont Northeastern Middle School act toward condemning the ideas of feminism and portraying the word in a negative light, it only helps to reinforce these negative connotations that feminist ideals do not support.

Sophie’s principal has since apologized and made an unaltered photo available for her, but Sophie’s efforts in defending feminism make the biggest impact in this situation. Sophie’s mom shares that it wasn’t an apology from the principal she desired but for more education and understanding about feminism so situations like this would not happen again. Please help to thank Sophie for her valiant efforts in standing up for her freedom of expression and her tireless efforts in supporting the understanding and education of feminism.

Dear Sophie,

It was extremely unfair for your school’s principal to decide to alter out the word “feminist” from your shirt in the school photo. However, the way you handled the situation–helping to promote awareness and understanding for the word feminism–has great meaning towards the progression of women’s rights.

When society and public institutions condemn the word “feminism” and portray it as a negative, it helps to reinforce negative stereotypes against the word and women. Standing up to those who put down feminism is important to help promote gender equality.

Thank you for your efforts in defending feminism and ensuring the correct understanding of the term. We hope that you continue to promote gender equality and that your all efforts in promoting awareness will help more people understand the positive ideals surrounding feminism.
