Drop Charges Against Grieving Father

Target: Blairsville, Georgia District Attorney Jeff Langley

Goal: Drop all charges against man who was arrested for trying to make the bridge where his daughter died safer.

Shannon Hamilton was arrested by the White County police after trying to set up a barricade at the bridge where his 16-year-old daughter had died in a car crash. Despite Hamilton’s best intentions to save others from suffering the same fate as his daughter, he is facing criminal charges for “[interfering] with government property.”

Hamilton’s daughter Cecily and her friend Taylor Swing were killed just a month prior after the latter lost control of the vehicle and careened over the edge of the Gene Nix Bridge. Unfortunately, both Cecily and Swing drowned inside of the vehicle after it landed into the creek below. There were barricades along the length of the bridge during the accident, but none were stationed at the entrance of the curve.

Hamilton firmly believes that if there had been barricades at that location, both teenagers could have survived. White County has been slow to respond to Hamilton’s requests to construct a barrier at the site of his daughter’s crash, so the grieving father took matters into his own hands by constructing his own. All materials were donated to him by neighbors, who all wanted the same thing he did: safety for the community.

If convicted, Hamilton may face imprisonment up to five years. Please sign this petition to ask District Attorney Jeff Langley to drop all charges against him.

Dear Jeff Langley,

Shannon Hamilton was arrested for interfering with government property after he was seen trying to set up a barricade at the site where his daughter died in a car crash. These charges are ridiculous. Hamilton does not deserve to be punished for trying to save other people from suffering the same fate as his daughter. He had requested a barrier from White County multiple times and only decided to set one up himself due to a lack of response.

Hamilton is simply a father mourning the loss of his child. By trying to construct a barricade himself, he is honoring her memory and taking action to make the community a safer place. He and his family do not need the added stress of dealing with these unnecessary charges. Please realize that his heart was in the right place. I am asking you to drop all charges against Shannon Hamilton and allow him to return home to family so they can properly grieve and recover from the loss of a loved one.
