Target: Chilean President Michelle Bachelet
Goal: Praise Chilean president for recognizing civil unions in same sex partnerships.
Civil unions of same-sex partners will now be recognized in Chile thanks to Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, who enacted legislation that will help minimize the difference between homosexual and heterosexual couples.
Many South American countries have made similar moves to recognize civil unions and Bachelet said that Chile was”taking a fundamental step on this road of rights, justice and respect for individual liberties.”
Some of the changes the law will grant partners in a civil union include allowing them to join their partner’s health plan, inherit each other’s property, and receive pension benefits. The Chilean government has estimated that around two million people will benefit as a result of this new law.
While Chile could do more to grant equal rights to same-sex couples such as recognizing gay marriages, this is an important step in equal rights for the LGBTQ community. We need to acknowledge this step as a way to encourage the Chilean government to do more. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay are the only countries in South America to fully recognize same-sex marriages and with more encouragement, we could help extend this to other countries as well.
Chile is a conservative country compared to others in South America, so this law is a huge step forward. Please sign the petition below to recognize Chile’s more progressive attitude towards granting equal rights to same-sex couples.
Dear President Michelle Bachelet,
I would like to thank you for your decision to enact a law that recognizes civil unions between same-sex partners. Chile is a conservative country in South America and progressing Chile forward in this way was no easy task.
Granting same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples is imperative. It is great to hear that these couples will now be able to join their partner’s health plan, inherit each other’s property, and receive pension benefits.
Chile is well on its way to becoming an example to others around the world of justice and equality for all humans. I am hopeful that Chile will join Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay and recognize gay marriages so that it promotes equality even more. Ending discrimination between heterosexual and homosexual couples should be a priority in all South American countries and I am confident that Chile will reach this achievement.
Please continue to pass legislation that grants equality for all and thank you once again for your role in recognizing same-sex civil unions.
