Target: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry
Goal: Correct egregious offenses against human rights in Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan has had a disgraceful human rights record that has been overlooked by the United States for years. It includes offenses such as detaining political activists on false charges, breaking up peaceful protest, imprisoning journalists, and passing legislation to limit fundamental freedoms. According to the Human Rights Watch 2014 World Report, the country’s human rights record has only been deteriorating. The Azerbaijan parliamentary elections are this year, and the United States needs to step up to demand ethical treatment of Azerbaijani citizens.
Due to Azerbaijan’s commitment to anti-terrorism and their role in supplying energy, the United States has overlooked their human rights record. However, the situation in the country is worsening. The last election in Azerbaijan included arrests and intimidation for political activists, highly restrictive media, and violating fundamental freedoms such as freedom of speech and assembly. These human rights violations can be stopped if the citizens are given a chance to participate in a free and fair election, free of fear and oppression.
Forty-five representatives from various human rights organizations and politicians have weighed in on the topic, and begun to urge Secretary of State John Kerry to impose sanctions on Azerbaijani officials. These sanctions would impose a visa ban, prohibit trade promotion assistance to Azerbaijan state-owned entities, convene parliamentary hearings in Azerbaijan, and organize a boycott composed of political leaders to stop the European games in Baku. Action by the United States will improve the quality of life for all Azerbaijani citizens. Sign the petition below to support sanctions against key Azerbaijani officials and help end the country’s record of human rights violations.
Dear U.S. Secretary Kerry,
The government of Azerbaijan has had a disgraceful human rights record that needs to be addressed. The United States has consistently stated that it is committed to humane treatment for all the world’s citizens, and now is the time to act on their behalf.
Not only are the human rights issues in Azerbaijan critical for them, they are for the United States as well. Human rights violations are violations against people everywhere.
I am urging you to recognize the violations by the Azerbaijani government, and impose sanctions on their government in order to recognize their deplorable actions and to assist in the improvement of the treatment of Azerbaijani citizens.
