End Mandatory Surgery for Transgender People

flag trans

Target: Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg

Goal: Stop requiring individuals to undergo sex reassignment surgery to be recognized as their true gender.

In Norway, individuals are not legally recognized as the gender they prefer until they undergo irreversible sexual reassignment surgery. In many countries in Europe, transgender individuals are deprived of their rights, often required to resort to dire circumstances to be recognized as the gender they prefer. While many have come to understand that gender identity is an entirely different concept than physiology, Norway enforces antiquated ideas of sex and gender that can challenge the beliefs of transgender individuals.

Transgender persons are often questioned and viewed negatively in Europe. In some countries, such as Germany, Spain, and Britain, psychiatric review is required from transgender individuals, viewing them as having a “problem.” The World Health Organization itself classifies transsexualism as a mental illness.

While unconventional gender identities are challenging to approach in societies that emphasize traditional, binary gender roles, requiring individuals to undergo a sterilizing surgery to be legally recognized as the gender they feel they are is harmful and unfair. If an individual would like to be recognized as the gender they believe themselves to be, irreversible surgery should not be a requirement. While many transgender individuals choose to undergo sexual reassignment surgery, this should be their own choice.

Europe’s traditional beliefs need a transformation to allow transgender individuals the rights they deserve. By signing this petition, you will be asking that Norway stops requiring individuals to undergo sexual reassignment surgery to be recognized as the gender they prefer.

Dear Ms. Solberg,

LGBTQ movements have been strong in many different places around the world. While Norway is a very progressive country, the rights transgender individuals have seem to be more limiting.

In order to be considered the preferred gender, a transgender person must undergo sexual reassignment surgery. While many transgender individuals already choose to have this surgery, there are others who prefer not to. The surgery is not only expensive but invasive and results in irreversible sterilization for the patient.

It is unfair to require this surgery from transgender persons. These individuals deserve to be legally recognized without the sexual reassignment surgery. I encourage you to be progressive and grant transgender individuals the rights they deserve by acting now to stop requiring them to undergo these surgeries.
