Target: Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson
Goal: Provide trans woman prisoner with enough hormone treatments to actually help her.
A prison is refusing to give a transgender inmate adequate hormone therapy, causing a disruption to her body that is causing her extreme emotional distress. Though the prison has agreed to give the inmate, Ashley Diamond, some hormones, the dosage appears to be too low to be effective. She has started growing unwanted facial hair and has attempted suicide–both clear indications that the treatment is not effective.
This Georgia prison has already violated Diamond’s human rights by putting her in a man’s prison, exposing her to repeated sexual assault. For unknown reasons, the prison took her off of the hormones she needs and now is refusing to put her back on her original dosage. This is causing Diamond to experience gender dysphoria, a recognized medical condition that causes intense depression and suicidal urges.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is suing the prison for violating the 8th Amendment that forbids cruel and unusual punishment. Diamond has described her experiences of being denied her hormone therapy as “torture.”
No matter what a prisoner has done, they still deserve basic human rights including adequate health care. Ms. Diamond clearly needs her medication in order to maintain reasonable mental health in the midst of an already horrific situation that has led to her being sexually assaulted as many as seven times. Sign the petition to demand that she be given the medication she needs.
Dear Commissioner Bryson,
There is currently an inmate within your corrections system who is being denied adequate health care. Ashley Diamond is experiencing gender dysphoria and suicidal urges because her hormone dosage is too low to be effective. She is now getting unwanted facial hair, which is proof enough that she isn’t getting the hormones she needs.
It’s bad enough that you’ve put this woman in a man’s prison where she has been subjected to as many as seven sexual assaults. You are not doing nearly enough to ensure that she has the basic human rights afforded to all prisoners. She is not safe in your prison and she is not getting the health care she needs. It’s no wonder she’s already tried to kill herself.
Ashley Diamond is a transgender woman, and is therefore extremely vulnerable to harassment and violence in our bigoted society. You yourself have contributed to this by being in charge of a prison system which has put her in severe danger and taken away her will to live. Please show a basic level of compassion and give her the rights she deserves before it’s too late.
