Target: John W. Friend, Superintendent of the Carlisle Area School District
Goal: Fire school nurse for allegedly threatening not to treat a student if she did not stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
Accusations of threatening to withhold care for a student because she did not stand for the Pledge of Allegiance at Carlisle, Pennsylvania’s Wilson Middle School has gotten a school nurse embroiled in controversy. If these allegations are true, this nurse is not fit to serve at any school. Demand that she be fired at once for this dangerous zealotry.
An eighth-grade student at the middle school reports that, after she exercised her federal right to not recite the Pledge of Allegiance one day at school, she was called out and berated by the school’s nurse. After she responded to the nurse’s initial question of why she did not stand and recite the Pledge, the student alleges that the nurse shouted at her, saying “Fine! Then leave! I have the right to not service you!”
The student then left the nurse’s office crying and tried to walk over to the administrative office to call home, but didn’t get far before the nurse followed her out and reportedly shouted at secretaries that “She isn’t calling a parent until I have a long conversation with her!” The alleged incident is now being investigated by the Carlisle Area School District.
This event is alarming for a number of reasons, including school employees not understanding the right of students to not recite the Pledge and the use of medical care as a weapon of coercion against a dissenting student. Sign the petition below to demand that the school district fire this nurse at once if she is found guilty of this entirely inappropriate behavior.
Dear Superintendent Friend,
I am writing you today regarding the controversy that has recently erupted around the alleged mistreatment of a student at Wilson Middle School by a school nurse for her not standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This event is disturbing and warrants immediate action from the Carlisle Area School District.
Students have the right to decline to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. It is a federal right that cannot be preempted by state or local ordinances. The fact that some officials in your district seem to be unaware of this, or perhaps even willfully ignorant of it, is worrying.
Additionally, it should go without saying that a school nurse threatening to withhold medical treatment to a student because they refused to recite the Pledge is entirely inappropriate. A person responsible for the health and wellbeing of students should not be inclined to abandon that duty at the drop a hat for political reasons.
I understand that your district has launched an investigation into the incident. If you find that the event transpired the way the student at Wilson Middle School alleges it did, I demand that you fire this irresponsible school nurse immediately.
