Demand Costco Commit to Reducing Deforestation

oil palm plantation

Target: Costco’s CEO W. Craig Jelinek

Goal: Commit to using sustainable palm oil to reduce the destruction of tropical forests.

Palm oil is a popular product that is found in many items ranging from toiletries to packaged food, however many suppliers of palm oil are responsible for tropical deforestation. While many companies have vowed to buy from suppliers that provide sustainable palm oil produced without deforestation, others like Costco and its Kirkland Signature brand have failed to provide a solid commitment to sustainable palm oil and saving the environment.

Unsustainably produced palm oil has many disastrous consequences. In order for companies to produce palm oil, many destroy large sections of tropical forests to clear room for palm oil plantations. This deforestation harms the environment and puts stress on the endangered species that live in the tropical forests. In addition to the destruction of forests and wildlife habitats, bulldozing forests for palm oil plantations results in carbon emissions, polluting the air and contributing to global warming and climate change.

Many corporate companies like Safeway and Dunkin’ Donuts have recognized the negative effects of unsustainably produced palm oil and have committed to tracing the sources of the palm oil they use and switching to completely sustainable palm oil in all of their products. However, other companies have neglected to address the issue at all, including Costco.

With this large corporate company supporting the environment’s well being, we can begin to work against global warming, deforestation, and threats on endangered species. Demand that Costco make the commitment to using only sustainably produced palm oil.

Dear Mr. Jelinek,

Palm oil has been known to come from problematic methods of production as some suppliers destroy forests for large palm oil plantations. Along with the mass deforestation, wildlife in the area is threatened and carbon emissions are produced, polluting the air and accelerating global warming.

There are too many negative repercussions from unsustainably obtained palm oil to ignore this issue. Many companies have come forward to commit to using only sustainably produced palm oil in their products. I urge that Costco make the same commitment.

Tropical forests, wildlife, and our climate do not deserve the horrible consequences of irresponsible palm oil produces. Large corporate companies like Costco can make a huge difference by supporting sustainability. Please commit to using only sustainable palm oil for Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand. The well being of the environment depends on it.
