Target: Mr. Barack Obama, President of the United States of America
Goal: Applaud call to end “conversion” therapies for gay and transgender individuals.
A resounding call to end “conversion” therapies for gay and transgender individuals has been issued by President Obama and the White House. This call comes on the heels of the tragic suicide of a teenage transgender woman who was harassed by religious therapists. This practice has gone on far longer than any civilized society should allow and must be put to an end as soon as humanly possible. Please sign here to thank President Obama for publicly acknowledging this growing problem.
The practice of “conversion” therapy is a mixed bag of disproven and discredited psychological brainwashing techniques that aim to “return” gay, bi, and transgender individuals to their “true” heterosexual selves. The process has scarred thousands of people since it began and it will continue to as long as it is permitted to take place, because sexuality is not a choice and being gay, bi, or transgender is not unnatural.
The people who advocate for this type of therapy truly do not understand human psychology and pretend their
religious opinions are scientific. For example, David Pickup, a therapist in both California and Texas, has said that being gay is “often brought about by serious emotional problems or sexual abuse.” Beyond being extremely offensive, Pickup is just plain wrong. Gay and transgender individuals come from every type of family and every type of background imaginable.
This practice has to come to an end before it endangers the lives and well-being of any more people who want nothing more than to be themselves. President Obama’s call to action is an extremely constructive first step, but it alone will not be enough. Please sign here to commend President Obama and echo his sentiments.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for speaking out against the practice of “conversion” therapy that is forced upon thousands of gay, bi, and transgender individuals across the country. This “therapy” has gone on far longer than any civilized society should permit and the time has come to finally ban its practice before it can harm any more innocent people.
Those who argue in favor of it are patently false in their claims that being gay, bi, or transgender is brought on by abuse or choice. It has been proven time and again that sexuality is innate and not a choice that one makes. Even if it were, who are they to tell people that their choices are incorrect? These people are nothing more than oppressive religious ideologues and they must not be allowed to hurt any more people.
I understand why you have chosen not to attempt national legislation on this issue and I think your strategy of pushing for a ban on these practice at the state level will be effective. Thank you again taking such a strong stance on an issue of such great importance. Please continue to advocate for the rights and protections of all people from persecution and abuse.
