Target: Julie Thompson, President of the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District
Goal: Fire teacher who taught Islamophobic propaganda to students as part of a segment on Islam.
Islam is more of a war cult bent on world domination than a religion practiced peacefully by over a billion people worldwide, according to a teacher at a Richmond, Texas high school. In the face of public pressure, the school has announced that the teacher will be punished, but has not disclosed how severe the punishment will be. Demand that the teacher be fired for this hateful propagandizing.
According to reports, an unnamed teacher at Foster High School made an independent decision to go off-curriculum during a segment they were teaching on Islam. That decision resulted in the distribution of an eight-page handout called Islam/Radical Islam (Did You Know) to students that outlined a number of unsourced assertions common in fringe anti-Islam discourse.
Through this handout, students were taught that Islam is “an ideology of war,” that Muslims’ goal is world domination through violence and crusade, and that under Muslim rule everyone will have to convert to Islam or be executed. Indeed, there was also a section teaching students what to do “if taken hostage by radical Islamists.”
These are the kinds of lies and biases that have made Muslims around the country targets for harassment and hate violence—they certainly should not be taught in schools. Sign the petition below to demand that the school district ensure that the teacher responsible for this lesson be fired at once.
Dear President Thomas,
I am writing you today regarding the controversy that has recently sprung up around the Islam lesson that a teacher at Richmond High School taught to their students. Though I am glad to hear that the teacher in question will face consequences for his propagandizing, I am concerned that it will be nothing but a slap on the wrist.
Muslims in the United States are already treated unfairly much too often. In the time since the attacks of September 11, 2001, when Islam was thrust into the public consciousness by a number of violent radicals hellbent on making a statement, American Muslims who had nothing to do with the event besides sharing the attackers’ faith have been demonized and thrown under the bus by our mainstream culture.
This demonization has led to an unprecedented increase in instances of anti-Muslim vandalism, harassment, and hate crimes around the country. Instead of working to correct the Islamophobic biases that create this climate of hate (and that no doubt many young people already hold), as any socially-conscious and responsible educator should, this teacher instead decided to reinforce them.
Whoever this educator is, they have demonstrated that they are, without question, extremely biased against Muslims, and that they have no qualms going off the mandated curriculum to advance their own political agendas. Such qualities should outright disqualify them from teaching in your school. I demand that you fire them from their position at Richmond High School at once.
