Target: Mr. Mitch McConnell, United States Senate Majority Leader
Goal: Stop police from using new “blinding guns” on civilians.
A new “compliance weapon,” named Z-RO, that blinds its target completely for 10 – 15 minutes is about to be sold to police for the purpose of incapacitating people, including protesters deemed hostile. Beyond sounding vaguely sinister, the weapon is extremely dangerous and poses a serious threat to any person wishing to publicly voice their discontent. New legislation must be created to ensure that these weapons are not given to police in large numbers to be used against protesters.
The Z-RO is said to cause temporary blindness, but its creators, Shield Defense Systems, LLC, have given no explanation as to how the weapon causes this effect. They simply claim that it is entirely safe and causes no long-term side-effects; a claim was made of tasers, which have killed over 500 people since 2001.
The real question here is not whether or not the Z-RO is safe to use on people, it’s whether or not police should be allowed to have them even if they are proven safe. After the events that took place in Ferguson, and how the protests that those events sparked were handled, the answer is an obvious no. Not all police are bad, but militarizing the police make them feel like they’re in the military. Giving them more weapons just means that more weapons will be used. The United States is not a war zone.
This is a time for police to demilitarize and show the public that they can be trusted to protect us once again, not to add to an already overstocked arsenal. Please sign here to demand that congress draft a bill that bans the usage of the Z-RO on all civilians in order to protect the right of free speech.
Dear Senate Majority Leader McConnell,
A new “compliance weapon” that completely blinds its target for 10 – 15 seconds is about to be sold to police for the purpose of incapacitating people, including protesters. The company developing this weapon, Shield Defense Systems, LLC, has not given any description of how the weapon works, but claims that it is completely safe and causes no long-term side-effects. I would ask you to remember that this is the same claim made of tasers, which have killed at least 500 people since 2001.
I am writing to demand that congress draft a bill that bans the use of these weapons on civilians in order to protect people and their free speech. People would be far less likely to express their discontent if there were a chance of being blinded by a mystery weapon that’s in the hands of trigger-happy police. In the wake of Ferguson and all of the protests that it sparked, is now really the time to further militarize police? I do not think so. Please act now to protect the civil liberties, and eyesight, of every American.
