Target: Kansas Governor Sam Brownback
Goal: Demand Governor Brownback work to reverse effects of a law that puts women’s lives in danger and limits their freedom to choose.
Kansas recently became the first state to limit one of the safest and most common abortion techniques used for second-trimester abortions, which makes abortions much more difficult and dangerous to get after the 14th week. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, a Republican who has a long history of opposing abortion, signed the bill into law that effectively limits one of the most common and safest abortion techniques which uses dilation and evacuation to abort the fetus. This law is unique to Kansas and now makes the state the strictest on abortions in the United States.
While most pregnancies are terminated below the 12th-week mark, nine percent of women in Kansas choose to abort past the 14th-week mark and removing this technique forces them to choose other techniques such as medically induced, nonsurgical procedures, which are far more dangerous for women.
The law doesn’t provide an exemption for those who were raped or impregnated by incest, showing the bill’s radical conservative side that clearly doesn’t care about the health or well-being of the woman. Any doctor that violates this law could be faced with a misdemeanor or even a felony if they are charged with multiple violations.
According to the Supreme Court, a woman has the right to an abortion until around 24 weeks. Kansas lawmakers and Governor Brownback have taken restrictions too far and are putting the lives of women in danger. Please sign the petition below and demand that Governor Brownback denounce this bill and work to keep women safe.
Dear Governor Brownback,
The recent passing of a bill that limits one of the safest and most common abortion techniques in the second-trimester is wrong and needs to be reversed.
By requiring doctors to administer techniques that they deem less safe, you are putting the mother’s lives at risk. Not only this, but the law’s blatant disregard for circumstances such as rape or incest is deeply troubling. Most women will get abortions before the 12th week, but for those that choose to have abortions farther along in their pregnancy, other procedures get riskier. We cannot allow the lives of these women to be in unnecessary danger.
A woman’s right to choose has been decided by the Supreme Court and it is our responsibility to respect this choice. Kansas is the strictest state in terms of abortion limitations, and this lack of interest in the health of women is upsetting. Please denounce this horrible law and work to remove these restrictions so that no woman has to risk her life for her right to choose.
