Save the Amazon Rainforest from Big Oil

Target: President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa

Goal: Prevent the sale of Amazon rainforest lands to big oil companies.

The Amazon rainforest is the largest of its kind on Earth, hosting a vibrant and rich variety of life. However, the President of Ecuador intends to sell these pristine lands to big oil companies, even though this landscape hasn’t recovered from Chevron’s oil spill decades ago. If another oil spill were to occur in this region, it is highly likely that the rainforest wouldn’t be able to recover. Sign this petition and tell President Rafael Correa not to sell this crucial piece of land and instead preserve it for generations to enjoy.

The actions of Chevron have been referred to as the “Rainforest Chernobyl.” The American company was sent to the Amazon rainforest to retrieve oil, but the company’s actions destroyed these pristine forests. The company cut corners, making decisions that would ultimately harm the environment, and when the company left, there were over a thousand open toxic waste pits. These pits have polluted nearby bodies of water, and recovery has been slow.

The resulting aftermath not only affected the environment, but the people as well. Many of the toxic waste that Chevron produced was dumped into the Amazon’s river, where indigenous tribes would drink it. Animals were suffering as well. What is further upsetting is that Chevron had policies in place to deal with waste. Dumping waste water into bodies of water was outlawed in states such as Texas and California decades before Chevron arrived in the Amazon. It is clearly obvious that big oil companies don’t care for the well-being of our environment; they simply want to make money. Tell President Rafael Correa that these companies shouldn’t be allowed in the Amazon rainforest, and instead the nation should focus their efforts on preserving the landscape.

Dear President Rafael Correa,

The Amazon rainforest contains a wealth of life and scientists suspect that there are many more species to discover in this amazing ecosystem. However, citizens around the world are growing concerned that you intend to sell this forest to big oil companies so they can drill and pollute this pristine landscape. As someone who loves our planet, I find this action greatly disturbing.

I am writing this letter urging you not to consider this action. The Amazon rainforest is the biggest of its kind on our planet. These trees clean our air and provide animals with homes and nourishment. If you were to allow big oil companies to come into this place and drill, you would be endangering the lives of these animals, and the indigenous tribes that live here. Instead I urge you to place your country’s efforts and resources towards preserving the Amazon rainforest so future generations can enjoy it.

I am a UK citizen but I support this petition as I would support anyone who works to preserve our World.
President Rafael Correa can’t do this on his own, he needs financial help from the countries that benefit from
exploitation he also need to be protected against the trade deals that mean Corporations may be able to sue his country for loss of profit when he tries to control their ravages.

Chevron are known environmental terrorists who owe the indigenous people of Ecuador billions in compensation for their past destruction. I’m really disappointed that Ecuador would allow them back to do further damage. Yasuni-ITT was a brilliant initiative and should be revisited – if you opened it up to the people of the world and not just governments who are corrupted by cashed up special interest groups it would have succeeded. Many of us care enough to donate $ to preserve something so precious.

  4. Catherine Alquier says:

Stop the destruction of Amazone for money and greed. What will be left for the generation to born ? They will hate us for our comportment. It’s crazy, destruction in all the earth for money and short view always. So sad and awful. Stop this outrage to the land of others peoples.

  5. Domenica Ott says:

Actually, President Correa was the one who had the brillant idea to ask money from the rich countries for leaving Ecuadors oil reserves in the ground. A completely justified request, since the whole planet would profit from this action. so why should we not collectively contribute? i do not know what became of the idea – does anybody know?

  6. Megan Gardner says:

Enough is enough! When will all this damage stop? When the last tree is chopped down? Sad beyond words. The greed of man is sickening to the core.

  7. Catherine Alquier says:

Stop to the destruction of nature for Oil.
