Punish University Accused of Animal Negligence

Target: Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack (USDA)

Goal: Investigate Georgia Regents University and hold them accountable for alleged animal neglect.

The USDA found various violations pertaining to animal neglect at Georgia Regents University, which included negligence, unsanitary conditions and death, but the animal abuse allegedly continues to occur.

GRU was investigated by the USDA on several occasions since 2013. Through their inspections they reportedly found that animals were being operated on with drugs that were 3 years past their expiration date. Shortly after surgery, a pig allegedly died after an old bag of sodium chloride was used during the operation. Two bottles of cleaning solution were also found to be out of date, yet they were still being used on the animals.

But it didn’t stop there, they also found that the housing requirements were reportedly not being met for the primates. By law, primates are required to be caged with other primates, as they are social animals. They found that GRU has reportedly kept many of the animals alone without any legal documentation for doing so. Not to mention the fact that these poor animals were kept in cages that were considered unsanitary by the USDA reports.

The record keeping from GRU is spotty at best and many practices that they have documented, like a nutrition plan for the primates, do not concur with actual veterinarian documentation. A group called “Stop Animal Exploitation Now” is calling for an in-depth investigation. The university, however, claims to be conducting its own internal investigation, which is simply not good enough.

This complete lack of compassion for animals is a crime and GRU’s lackluster attempts at abiding by the law will not due. Sign this petition to let the USDA know that this university needs to be punished for its alleged actions.

Dear Secretary Vilsack,

Hold Georgia Regents University accountable for its many counts of animal abuse. The only way to stop this cycle of abuse is to make sure that each count is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Warnings are not enough, as it seems that this university has no regard for making actual change. They have, by your own findings, violated many animal protection laws and each visit allegedly finds new shocking information about how they have curtailed regulation. Each animal that is left by itself in a cage is an animal suffering because of human neglect. Each animal that suffers from the use of outdated drugs is a possible death that could have been avoided.

Do not depend on an internal review to fix the problem, as this school’s documentation practices have been proven untrustworthy. Do an in-depth investigation and finally hold GRU accountable for any and all crimes against animals that you may find.
