Target: Andrew Cuomo, Governor of New York
Goal: Save a coveted nature preserve and migratory bird habitat from a proposed development plan.
An important nature preserve, which provides a safe haven for hundreds of species of migratory birds, is in danger from a proposed development project. The project will destroy native land for commercial and residential infrastructure. Action must be taken now to preserve this precious urban wildlife habitat.
Situated in Buffalo, New York, the Times Beach Nature Preserve connects the city to an essential bird migratory route in the Niagara River corridor. The preserve sits at the shore of Lake Erie and attracts 250 species of birds such as the rare yellow-crowned night heron, the cinnamon teal duck, and the Acadian flycatcher. Lake Erie is just one of the freshwater lakes that make up the Great Lakes. This massive connection of freshwater lakes contains 20 percent of the Earth’s freshwater supply. Development near the lakes’ shores should be approached with caution and a well-defined environmental impact assessment.
The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC) proposed development on Buffalo’s Outer Harbor. The Outer Harbor skirts the preserve and provides a corridor for terrestrial wildlife. The ECHDC has proposed a huge project to build a shopping center, residential housing, parking, and possibly even a concert venue. The development will destroy this essential wildlife corridor and disrupt the lives of wildlife through noise pollution. The public will no longer have access to the Outer Harbor and many fear about the expensive price tag this development project will bring.
The ECHDC has not provided the public with an environmental assessment of the project or an estimated cost. The members of the ECHDC refuse to leave the green space alone. By signing this petition, you are begging the governor of New York to reject the development project for the safety and preservation of wildlife.
Dear Governor Cuomo,
The Times Beach Nature Preserve is an important wildlife habitat for migratory birds and Buffalo’s terrestrial wildlife. The preserve provides a necessary space for 250 migrating bird species. Years of advocacy have made the preserve into what it is today.
However, the integrity of the preserve and the surrounding area is threatened by the ECHDC’s proposed development project. The project will destroy natural land during construction, blocking a wildlife corridor and public access. Once the development is in place, wildlife will suffer from noise pollution. Native land should be coveted, especially land near such an essential freshwater source. Please protect Buffalo’s environmental integrity and wildlife by denying this expensive and destructive development project.
