Target: ForceChange community, human rights activists and pro LGBT businesses
Goal: Thank the ForceChange community, pro-LGBT business, and other activists for helping to prevent Indiana businesses from discriminating against LGBT customers.
Indiana businesses are effectively prevented from discriminating based on sexual orientation and gender identity, thanks to Governor Mike Pence and activists around the country. This is the first time the state has ever put protections for the LGBT+ community into law.
Recently, Gov. Pence signed the Religious Freedom Bill into law, which opened the door for businesses to discriminate against the LGBT+ community on the grounds of religious freedom. A petition was created here on ForceChange, and other activist groups, businesses and individuals made their voices heard in various ways. Now, thanks to those combined efforts, a great change has occurred and the discriminatory bill has been amended.
The changes make it clear that Indiana businesses cannot use the law as an excuse for refusing “to offer or provide services, facilities, use of public accommodations, goods, employment, or housing” to any persons based on “race, color, religion, ancestry, age, national origin, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or United States military service.”
It is important to realize that these changes did not occur simply because lawmakers had a change of heart, but they were a direct result of our united voice standing against discrimination. The pressure applied by activists, businesses and petitions like those on ForceChange are pivotal in making a difference.
Though there is still a ways to go in the fight for equality, both in Indiana and nationwide, this is an important step in the right direction for our entire country.
To the LGBT+ community and its allies,
Thank you for your unwavering support in the fight for equality in this country. The Religious Freedom Bill, which opened the door for discrimination in the state of Indiana, has been altered to protect the LGBT community from bigotry under the guise of religious expression.
There is still a long way to go, as there are still many states with similar laws in effect, but it is also important to take in the victories, as each small step is another move in the right direction.
This is the first time in the history of Indiana that protections have been extended to the LGBT community statewide. This historic feat could not have been made possible without your effort and dedication to the cause.
Human rights groups, activists, businesses and petitions like the ones on ForceChange are the true bringers of change. Our voices combined are powerful, and the pressure we applied all week to the lawmakers in Indiana helped get that point across.
Thank you for your help in changing our nation for the better.
