Success: Indiana to End Discrimination Against LGBTQ

Target:  Indiana Governor Mike Pence

Goal: Praise the decision not to allow businesses to refuse service to LGBTQ based on religious beliefs in Indiana.

Indiana governor Mike Pence felt the backlash against the state’s controversial religious freedom bill, and thanks in part to ForceChange activists, he has supported the addition of an amendment to the controversial discrimination bill that will not allow businesses to turn away people based on race, color, religion, ancestry, age, national origin, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or United States military service.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) that was recently signed into law has received enormous backlash and the assurance from Governor Pence was not enough to quell the concern over what this law could mean for the LGBTQ community. Many prominent businesses around the country vowed to cancel any nonessential trips to Indiana, causing the state potential revenue.

LGBTQ rights group Freedom Indiana has applauded the decision by Governor Pence to add this crucial amendment and said that “while there is still more work to do to ensure that Indiana state law explicitly protects gay and transgender Hoosiers from discrimination, this announcement is progress we couldn’t have imagined just a week ago when Gov Pence signed the law and created immediate national backlash.”

It is great to hear that our efforts to change this horrible law have been successful and that Indiana is making progress to no longer discriminate against people by using their religion as an excuse.  No one deserves to be turned away from a business based on their sexuality. Sign the petition below to thank Governor Mike Pence for listening to the concern from those of us at ForceChange and adding this amendment.

Dear Governor Mike Pence,

I would like to thank you for listening to concerned voices across the country and in Indiana over the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. While you have stated that the original law was not intended to discriminate against anyone, the language of the law allowed businesses to discriminate against the LGBTQ community by hiding behind their religion as an excuse. This was not acceptable.

I am glad to hear that the new amendment to the bill will reverse this discrimination. Businesses should not be allowed to turn people away based on their sexuality.  Indiana has not received very good press lately due to this law. This amendment will also help to restore Indiana’s reputation as a welcoming place to all once again.

It is nice to know that our voices have been heard and that you have taken action to reverse this horrible discrimination. Thank you for making this change and please continue to make Indiana a welcoming place to everyone, regardless of their race, sexuality, national identity, etc.
