Save Retired Greyhounds from Slaughter

Target: Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott

Goal: Re-home retired greyhounds in Australia instead of killing them.

The discovery of 55 greyhound carcasses–most of whom were shot and dumped into a mass grave–has astounded the public in Queensland. The area is known for its racing greyhound industry, and the issue has been hotly debated by animal lovers and those who are fond of racing greyhounds. The discovery of this mass dog grave has ignited the need for the government to devote more resources for these animals when they retire, otherwise these dogs will be euthanized, or worse, slaughtered. Sign this petition and urge Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the government of Australia to find homes for retired greyhounds.

The incident of the 55 dead greyhounds has indeed shocked the community, but it is not uncommon for racing greyhounds to be treated like objects or possessions. Since many greyhounds in Queensland are trained by chasing live bait, it makes it difficult to re-home retired greyhounds. These dogs are prone towards running after small animals and killing them. Instead of teaching these retired dogs not to run after small game, those in the racing industry would rather dispose of them.

This incident is indeed distressing and the Queensland police are doing all they can to find the suspects responsible for the deaths of these dogs. However, other measures need to be made for the sake of all retired racing dogs. Funding and other efforts need to be made to re-home them. This means that greyhounds should be taught how to walk on the leash without chasing small animals, how to behave in a home, and be socialized with other dogs and humans. All of these things require funds, time, and trained people.

Dogs have been the companions of humans for thousands of years. It would be inhumane and unethical to kill these dogs because humans trained them to be killers and racers. Dogs have feelings and can still offer companionship after their racing days are over. If you believe that more needs to be done to save and re-home racing greyhounds, please sign this petition. Tell Prime Minister Tony Abbott that our dogs deserve a second chance at life.

Dear Prime Minister Tony Abbott,

Police in Queensland found a mass grave containing the bodies of 55 greyhounds. Most of these dogs were shot, as investigators not only found gunshot wounds, but also .22 caliber shells at the site. This is most disturbing, especially for those of us who love dogs.

This incident highlights a growing need to place more resources towards re-homing retired greyhounds. Experts have spoken on how difficult it is to re-home retired greyhounds because of their hunting tendencies, but humans made them this way. It is wrong to kill any animal because humans deemed that they are no longer fit for their purposes. Greyhounds were trained to race on the track by humans, and humans should ensure that greyhounds lead a happy life. As a dog lover I implore the Australia government to devote more resources towards re-homing greyhounds.

This is disgusting and something has to change! Let’s start by ending all greyhound racing!! These poor dogs seem to have the same fate as pitt bulls after they are fought! All animals should be treated with respect!!!!

  2. Christine Hartley says:

I can’t believe this happened in my country. These animals put their trust in people. It has been well proven that greyhounds make good pets. They need rehabilitation, not extermination.

  3. It is horrible what these beautiful, gentle creatures endure at the hands of greedy subhuman bastards who care nothing about other living creatures besides themselves. If they cannot be stopped by law, then shoot the bastards~~they don’t deserve to live and breathe. I hate them and I hate what they do!!! Greyhound racing should be banned forever all over the world.

  5. Lisbeth Alvarado Sanchez says:

It is heartbreaking to know that after this innocent dogs have been exploited for money they are murdered and disposed as garbage. What kind of monsters are this scumbags! They should be sent to jail and never allowed to own an animal in their life. This is the least that should be done.

  6. Michael Guest says:

Enough is enough. This has been around too long. The racing of greyhounds is cruel and abusive. It’s not a sport and not entertainment. These dogs should be helped to find better homes to live in and retire. All animals need love, care and respect.

  7. Joanne Kreil says:

I have a retired racer, my second. They make great companions and the efforts to rehome them is well worth it. The dog racing industry needs to end. The treatment of sighthounds in many countries is apalling. From being shot to having pieces of wood jammed in their mouths and left to starve and die of thirst in Spain. Disgusting and sickening.

  8. They just found 55 skeletons of greyhounds in Australia that had been shot because they did not win races

  9. Sally Koch says:

what kind of sickos would even think to do that! Such users and selfish sickos

  10. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  11. What a horrific and cruel and unconscionable sport — it’s filled with hate, irrationality — THEY DESERVE CARING AND LOVING HOMES!

  12. I’d say: let’s reverse things for a day or two sometimes, a have humans take the greyhounds’ place, the only way to make such people see sense. We are all live creatures together after all. If the hounds won’t exterminate the humans, that’s for sure. Makes them morally superior already!
