Applaud Lawyer Fighting for Animal Personhood

Target: Lawyer Steven Wise

Goal: Applaud movement to give chimps, elephants, gorillas and orca whales the same rights as people and corporations.

There is something to be said for an individual who uses his or her community or job status to do good. Steven Wise, a lawyer, has dedicated his career to gaining personhood status for chimps, elephants, gorillas and orca whales. Wise believes that these particular species are too intelligent to be used for human entertainment, and he is absolutely correct in his belief.

Wise has stated that personhood is a public policy concept. Wise arrives at this personhood conclusion because that status has been given to inanimate objects like holy scripts and corporations. Wise has dedicated decades of his life to gaining this game-changing legal status for these animals. Because of many current events that have sparked animal-rights debates, people are tuning in, curious about Wise’s standpoint and work. He is an incredible human with a compassionate agenda. If successful, the formerly mentioned species will no longer be used in inhumane ways, such as for human entertainment or testing.

Because of what this status would mean for these species, it is an incredibly important fight. Support Wise and his mission to gain respect for certain species by becoming active in your own community, and by signing this petition.

Dear Mr. Wise,

You recently spoke at a TED conference on behalf of chimpanzees, orca whales, elephants and gorillas. You have a compassionate and incredible agenda: to help these species attain personhood in the eyes of the law. While this journey has proven to be difficult, and likely very frustrating, I, along with the undersigned, want you to know that you are supported and commended.

Standing up for what you believe in is not always easy, especially if your beliefs are not of popular opinion. Thankfully, these animals have been on people’s radar everywhere due to recent happenings and exploitations, as shown in the documentary “Blackfish.” Every single individual animal that belongs to any of these species is way too intelligent to be exploited by humans. There will come a day when they are all regarded as legal people, with rights and deserved respect. Until then, these animals are relying on people like you to spread a message of compassion, respect, and understanding.

Thank you for standing up for those with no voice. Please continue to fight for the rights of intelligent, non-human people.

  1. All animals feel pain and react to the environment to survive, thus ALL animals have rights and deserve humane and kind treatment.

  2. Kathy Williams says:

While I understand that unconventional ideas are painfully slow to gain traction, and that changes in attitude must necessarily begin with baby steps, I’m still unclear why the Nonhuman Rights Project is limiting its legal battle to include such a few, select species. I can only hope that if successful, Mr. Wise’s past thirty years of passionate and compassionate dedication will open the floodgates for future victims of exploitation, abuse and cruelty – regardless of their place in the animal kingdom.
