Target: Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval
Goal: Do not legalize transphobic discrimination regarding restroom use.
Nevada is attempting to limit restroom use among transgender and gender-nonconforming students, following several other states. The proposal would only allow students to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender based on physical characteristics. Urge Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to disavow this transphobic initiative that will inevitably pose dangers to trans people.
Studies have shown the positive impact of allowing students to use the restroom that pertains to their gender identity rather than their sex. It can significantly increase confidence and eliminate many of the dangers transgender students face as a result of transphobia. Furthermore, transgender students are far more likely to encounter all types of violence in restrooms.
The goal of this proposition is to promote privacy and safety among students. It seems, however, this does not include the safety or privacy of transgender students. This initiative is misguided as a result of misinformation surrounding gender identity and restroom safety. It will only decrease the level of understanding and unity between gender-nonconforming and cisgender individuals. In a world trying so desperately to understand and accept one another, this is an embarrassingly large step backward for all.
Please sign this petition to urge Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to not approve transphobic legislation that will place a wedge between members of society and put transgender students in unnecessary danger.
Dear Governor Sandoval,
I’m writing you to express my discomfort with a recent proposal to introduce a transphobic initiative in the state of Nevada. Like several other states, Nevada is proposing dangerous changes to restroom policies in schools that would single out gender-nonconforming individuals and drive a wedge between members of society. I urge you to not sign this bill and refuse to introduce transphobic legislation into our progressive society.
As we have seen in the past, transgender students have a higher likelihood of being bullied, both verbally and physically. Forcing gender-nonconforming students to use the restroom that pertains to their sex at birth is not conducive to a society attempting to eliminate discrimination in all forms. This will inevitably place these students in unnecessary danger while eliminating any sense of equality.
Should Nevada implement restroom restrictions on gender-nonconforming students, it will be a huge step backward that does not accomplish the initial goals of promoting safety and privacy. Please do not allow such legislation and vow to take a stand for gender-nonconforming and transgender students.
