Target: Cardiologist of the London Royal Free Hospital Aseem Malhotra
Goal: Support doctors who want to ban fast food chains from opening in hospitals.
McDonald’s has contracts to serve food in about 20 hospitals across the United States. Not only do they serve their burgers and fries in the hospital cafeterias, they even deliver the food to sick patients rooms. Doctors all over the world are now fighting to stop the fast food chain from opening up in their hospitals.
Cardiologist Aseem Malhotra is one of the doctors to publicly criticize the fast food chain for irresponsibly partnering up with hospitals to sell their food. He believes that their marketing moves are irresponsible and have no place in an environment that is supposed to be preventing an unhealthy lifestyle. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit organization of 12,000 doctors, holds the same views as Dr. Malhotra.
The committee has been doing a series of hospital food reports to analyze and assess how bad the situation is. In their research, they found that fast food chains are convincing hospitals to promote unhealthy food to their patients and staff. They also found that a hospital in Georgia has an agreement with a fast food chain that says that the more burgers they sell, the more money the hospital makes. Chick-Fil-A and Wendy’s are also in various hospitals nationwide. This means that these hospitals are promoting unhealthy foods that are causing their patients’ health problems, specifically heart disease and diabetes.
Ever since the committee has started issuing their food reports to the hospitals, a few of them have decided to cut out the junk food and serve healthier options. Hopefully in the future, all of the hospitals will ban fast food chains from conducting business in their institutions.
Please sign this petition to support Dr. Aseem Malhotra and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in their efforts to push out fast food chains from hospitals.
Dear Dr. Aseem Malhotra,
Thank you for publishing your criticism of the controversial marketing tactics of fast food chains opening in hospitals. They are irresponsibly marketing their foods to hospitals, aka institutions that are supposed to be setting a prime example for healthy lifestyles. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has looked into the problem and has found far too many fast food chains running their business in hospitals nationwide.
Thankfully, since the committee has been issuing their reports, some of the hospitals decided to remove their junk food and serve healthier options instead. Please continue to expose the hospitals that are allowing the fast food chains to serve people unhealthy foods.
