Target: Sally Jewell, United States Secretary of the Interior
Goal: Save sacred land by canceling current oil and gas leases in the area.
A pristine wilderness area is threatened by 18 oil and gas leases. The land is extremely important to local Native Americans and outdoor recreationists. The tribal community has struggled with the federal government over this land for years and now is the time to take action. America’s native land should be cherished, not sold off for non-renewable extraction.
Located in Montana, the Badger-Two Medicine area is sacred to the Blackfeet tribe. The land, which is situated between the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, Glacier National Park, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, boasts two pristine, clear rivers that run from the area’s prominent mountain. The Blackfeet regard this land as holy and powerful; it plays a large part in the tribe’s origin story. Locals covet the land as well because it exists as a remarkable natural landmark where prairie land meets the Rocky Mountains. For 30 years, the area has been under threat of industrialization by oil and gas companies.
The Badger-Two Medicine area could become just another profit-making hole in the ground. Although the region has received numerous federal protections by the creation of Glacier National Park, Sun River Game Preserve, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness, the oil and gas leases threaten these preservation efforts. The oil and gas industry could potentially pollute the area with its invasive and disruptive operations, destroying land, natural resources, and historical sites. This area might be rich in nonrenewable energy sources but that does not mean such operations should take place here.
We must protect our country’s native lands before they are destroyed for profit. The Blackfeet community should own the rights to their ancestral terrain. By signing this petition, you are demanding that the U.S. Secretary of the Interior cancel the 18 oil and gas leases currently on the Badger-Two Medicine area.
Dear Secretary Jewell,
The Badger-Two Medicine area, located near Glacier National Park in Montana, is an important place for the Blackfeet Indian tribe. The location holds significant importance to the tribe’s origin and culture. Pristine rivers run through the land, providing freshwater for the local community and wildlife.
Currently, there are 18 oil and gas leases on Badger-Two Medicine area. These leases threaten the area’s integrity. The industrialization of this place could potentially pollute this native wonder. The Blackfeet should have the right to their native land, not the oil and gas industry. I urge you to please take action and cancel the 18 oil and gas leases currently on this coveted property.
