Target: Rona Ambrose, Director of Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Goal: Investigate allegations of continued animal cruelty at poultry producer already found guilty of cruelty.
Allegations of animal cruelty at Toronto’s Maple Lodge Farms have surfaced again, for the second time in only a few years. An undercover Mercy for Animals investigation allegedly showed ongoing mistreatment at one of the producer’s plants only a few short months after an Ontario court found the company guilty of violating the Health of Animals Act. Despite the producer being ordered to spend $1 million improving their oversight capabilities and ensuring all farms comply with federal regulations, the rights group claims that the cruel practices continued unabated.
Footage allegedly taken from a plant near Brampton, Ontario showed dead, frozen birds being unloaded at the plant from non-temperature-controlled transport vehicles, a practice that the producer had previously faced charges for. According to court records, over 2,000 birds were allowed to freeze to death during transport in 2009. The footage went on to depict animals with broken bones from being handled roughly or getting stuck between cages, as well as animals being sent to slaughter while still conscious.
While the producer has launched an independent investigation into the claims and asserted its commitment to animal welfare, it is clear that the first 20 cruelty charges did not prompt significant change to procedure. Not only should the allegations be investigated by the federal government, but further charges should be laid due to the company’s blatant noncompliance with court orders. Sign the petition below to demand that the Canadian government investigate the matter and push for the closure of the facility if it is found to be in breach of law again.
Dear Ms. Rona Ambrose,
Rights group Mercy for Animals has released a video allegedly depicting continued animal cruelty at Maple Lodge Foods, one of the country’s largest poultry producers. The group claims that despite being found guilty of animal cruelty and ordered to improve conditions, Maple Lodge Farms continues to allow the poor treatment of animals. An undercover investigation revealed chickens freezing to death during transportation, being handled with excessive roughness, and being slaughtered while still conscious.
Despite the producer opening its own internal investigation, the federal government should also look into these claims, as it is clear that the company has not followed through with a court order mandating increased oversight in order to prevent further cruelty. We, the undersigned, demand that a federal investigation is launched, and that the producer is shut down for good if found guilty.
