Target: Colorado Senate President Bill Cadman
Goal: Let transgender people change the gender on their birth certificates to reflect their gender identity.
Transgender people in Colorado could soon be able to change the gender indicated on their birth certificates to be consistent with their gender identity, if legislation introduced by State Representative Dominick Moreno becomes law. The bill is set to pass the Democrat-controlled House, but will face difficulty in the state’s Republican Senate. Demand that the Republicans vote in favor of this bill so that it can become law.
Gender is not the biological “reality” that Western culture has contended it to be over the course of modern history. The gender a person feels is not dependent on the sex organs they possess—a woman can have a penis, and a man can have a vagina.
Unfortunately, we live in a culture where these realities are far from universally respected. This Colorado proposal will give trans people the legal ability to have the gender on their birth certificates changed to fit the gender they identify with, not the gender they were assigned at birth based on their genitalia. Though it may seem small, this is a necessary step towards granting the trans community the legal rights it deserves.
Despite the progressive possibility, traditionally anti-LGBT conservative lawmakers in the state could still block this legislation. Sign the petition below to demand the leader of the Colorado Senate’s Republicans gather the votes necessary from his party to pass this groundbreaking bill into law.
Dear Senator Cadman,
I am writing you today regarding a bill that will hopefully soon find its way to your Senate chamber for a vote. The bill, introduced by Representative Dominick Moreno, would give transgender people the right to change the gender on their birth certificates to reflect the gender they identify with.
Transgender people often face harassment and discrimination on the basis of their gender. Sometimes that comes from their being outed through their government identification, which reveals that they are “not actually the gender” they are presenting as. In a perfect world this inconsistency would not be grounds for any kind of disrespect, but given that we live in a culture where trans and nonbinary genders are not accepted by many people, the government has a duty to protect this community.
That is where this bill comes in. By giving trans people the legal ability to change the gender on their birth certificate, you and your Republican colleagues in the Senate could take a tangible stand against discrimination and in favor of civil rights, something every American should jump at the opportunity to do.
The only thing standing between this bill and it becoming law is your Republican-controlled Senate. I demand that you gather the votes needed to pass this bill and send it on to Governor Hickenlooper to be signed into law.
