Target: Indiana Governor Mike Pence
Goal: Don’t allow business to legally discriminate against the LGBT+ community.
Governor Mike Pence of Indiana secretly signed a bill into law that would effectively allow state businesses to legally discriminate against the LGBT+ community. The Religious Freedom Bill is disguised as legislation that would allow more freedom to those who, as the governor puts it, “feel their religious liberty is under attack by government action.” What it actually does is open the door for bigoted business owners to legally discriminate against others, namely the LGBT+ community.
This bill was signed in a “private ceremony.” There was no media present and it was closed to the public. However, some of the most powerful conservative state lobbyists were in attendance. This bill is dangerous, as it sets a precedent for other states to join in on the bandwagon of intolerance. With so much energy being put toward the struggle for marriage equality, it is important that bills like this do not simply slip past.
Many big business bringers have expressed their concerns over the bill. The NCAA is concerned with how the bill will affect its student athletes and employees, and Gen. Con, the state’s largest convention, is considering pulling out of the state entirely.
By signing this petition, you will send a message to both these businesses and the state governor that you are against legalized bigotry and that discrimination is not a “freedom.”
Dear Gov. Pence,
The Religious Freedom Bill that was privately signed into law is fundamentally flawed. It leaves an egregious amount of leeway for discrimination and bigotry and must be abolished.
Despite possible intentions, the bill effectively gives Indiana citizens grounds to reject others who they feel are not in line with their own personal religious beliefs, namely those who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender. This bill is in essence legalizing discrimination, and creates an unsafe and tense environment for those who live alternative lifestyles.
The legislation also creates a slew of problems for out of state businesses and encourages a less progressive means of lawmaking nationwide. This type of loop-hole lawmaking cannot continue. If it does, not only will the people of Indiana suffer, but so will its economy, as large business owners and their supporters will not side with such closed minded conservatism.
I urge you to reevaluate this piece of legislation and repeal it for the good of all Indiana citizens and for the benefit of a more progressive country.
