Target: Indiana Governor, Mike Pence
Goal: Don’t allow businesses to discriminate against people based on their sexuality.
Businesses will now be able to refuse to provide service to people based on their sexuality, thanks to a new law signed by Indiana governor Mike Pence. This law has already hurt Indiana and has sparked protests all across the country. This blatant disregard for human rights is staggering. The ability to discriminate against the LGBTQ community is being allowed under the guise of religious freedom. Just because your religion tells you to, it’s not okay to discriminate against others.
Pence said that, “This bill is not about discrimination, and if I thought it legalized discrimination in any way I would’ve vetoed it.” Governor Pence knows that this allows businesses legal cover to refuse to provide service to people because of their sexuality. There is no excuse for signing this terrible bill into law.
Not only has Indiana taken steps backward in regards to human rights, the state now risks losing a lot of money to this law because of the backlash it has received. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is based in Indiana and NCAA President Mark Emmert has voiced concerns over the law and how it will affect student athletes. Salesforce.com founder and CEO Marc Benioff announced that he would be protesting the law by not sending employees to the state where they might face discrimination. All of this deeply hurts Indiana’s economy and this bill was not passed in good conscience.
Please sign the petition below to protest this awful law that discriminates against people in the name of religious freedom. We cannot tolerate ugly legislation that protects businesses from ignoring basic human rights.
Dear Governor Pence,
I am deeply disappointed in the recent passing of legislation that will allow businesses in Indiana to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation. This is a blatant disregard of human rights.
The defense against this law has been that businesses should be able to have the freedom of religion and choose who they provide service to. While religious tolerance is important in this country, it does not trump basic human rights. This law is a dangerous and unfortunate mark on Indiana’s record.
Not only does this impede human rights, it deeply hurts Indiana by discouraging many to visit the state. Protests over this bill have already begun to cost Indiana and it would be unfortunate to see the state’s economy take such a hit from a law that could have been vetoed.
Please recognize the damage that this law has and will continue to have on the state of Indiana. I encourage you to work with the LGBTQ community to do all that you can to stop the devastating effects of this law.
