Protect Children from Abuse

Target: Texas Commissioner John Specia of the Department of Family Protective Services

Goal: Increase screening procedures for temporary caregivers of children who are relocated by Child Protective Services.

Recently, three children in the state of Texas tragically died while under the supervision of their temporary caregiver assigned by Child Protective Services. These children were relocated by CPS due to an investigation of their parents, often involving abuse or neglect, to a temporary caregiver who would be responsible for their safety. However, many are now arguing that CPS did not do enough to screen the temporary caregivers, which resulted in three different tragedies.

When a child is suspected to be undergoing abuse or neglect or their parent is incapable of providing adequate care, Child Protective Services helps to relocate children to a temporary living situation where they are watched over by a caregiver. When there are suspected situations of abuse or neglect by parents, any alternative caregiver may seem to pose the best solution for the problem. However, this is not always the case.

Sometimes the caregiver who is responsible for the safety the child proves to be inadequate and puts the child at risk. Recent situations have resulted in an unsupervised child accidentally shooting himself, a young girl intentionally drowned, and another young girl who was killed in a car accident where the driver, her caregiver, was allegedly under the influence.

It should seem obvious that these children need adequate protection. Taking them from their parents and throwing them into living situations of unfit caregivers that put their lives at risk is irresponsible and cruel. Demand that the Department of Family Protective Services implement harsher screening procedures for temporary caregivers so that we may stop these tragedies.

Dear Commissioner Specia,

Recently there have been many tragic examples of children being injured or killed while under the supervision of temporary caregivers assigned by Child Protective Services. As a result, many have begun to question the methods of CPS and whether or not enough is being done to ensure the best protection for children who are temporarily removed from the care of their parents.

However, with the many examples of children neglected or abused by their temporary caregivers, there is substantial evidence that action needs to be taken to provide harsher screening procedures for these caregivers. Please help prevent any more harm to children by enforcing stricter screening procedures for temporary caregivers, ensuring they are completely adequate and fit to take care of a child. By taking action now, you can help put an end to these awful tragedies.
