Target: Todd Adams, Associate General Minister and Vice President of Disciples of Christ
Goal: Thank Disciples of Christ for its unwavering support of the LGBT community.
The Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, has reaffirmed support of the LGBT community by expressing strong opposition to Indiana’s proposed Religious Freedom Bill. The Church has held an annual convention in Indianapolis several times in the past and was scheduled to host again in 2017. It has recently informed Indiana Governor Mike Pence of its plans to take the convention elsewhere, should he sign this discriminatory bill. Thank the Disciples of Christ for taking a stand for LGBT rights and demonstrating its commitment to equality.
The Religious Freedom Bill would allow business owners to refuse services based on sexual orientation, on the grounds of religious beliefs. Though the bill will most likely be signed, opposition has been widespread. General Minister Todd Adams has voiced his disgust, stating, “…hate and bigotry wrapped in religious freedom is still hate and bigotry.”
This is not the first time the church has taken a strong stance against discrimination. In the 1960s, it threatened similar action in Dallas for receiving opposition to MLK Jr. speaking at a convention. The church has a long history of supporting all groups of people and directly opposing the use of religious beliefs as an excuse to mistreat one another.
Please sign this petition to thank the Disciples of Christ for their inclusive views and constant refusal to support a state preparing to take a step backward in the fight for equality.
Dear Minister Adams,
The Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, has been a strong supporter of equality for quite some time. I was extremely pleased and inspired to read of your opposition to the Religious Freedom Bill in Indiana. Thank you for taking a stand for the LGBT community and for denouncing the use of religious beliefs as a means for discrimination.
Your unwavering support means everything to the LGBT community and its supporters. The annual convention held by the Disciples of Christ is a huge event that brings in millions of dollars in revenue. Your belief that this event should not be held in a state with legalized discrimination is extremely important in the fight for equality and demonstrates your dedication to a progressive society.
Once again, I want to thank you for continuing to uphold strong values and refusing to accept the injustices in the world.
