Target: President of China, Xi Jinping
Goal: Praise China for shutting down one of its major coal power plants.
China is making plans to shut down one of the remaining four major coal power plants in its capital city as a reaction to pressures from within its nation and abroad. With the burning of fossil fuels being the primary contributor to air pollution and climate change, this news comes as a relief to the rest of the world. China instead will be opting towards nuclear power or gas to produce energy for the country. While it is not the ideal solution, the burning of coal has a more negative impact on the environment than nuclear power or natural gas. The nation should be praised for making this change as it will help to improve air quality and the environment.
In 2016, China Huaneng Group Corp.’s largest coal power plant will be closed down and the facilities will be replaced with gas-fired stations. These stations are estimated to give 2.6 times more electricity than the original coal power plants in an attempt to cut down on the amount of fossil fuel being released into the atmosphere. With the imminent closure of major coal plants, China hopes to cut down fossil fuel emissions by 30 million tons. The nation has promised to reduce the amount of annual pollution in the nation by a whopping 13 million metric tons by 2017.
Air pollution is a serious problem in many developing countries. Not only will toxic particles in the air aggravate respiratory functions, it also has serious long term consequences for the environment. Waste from these coal power plants pollute waterways, the pollution interferes with the global climate, and it leaves a brown yellowish haze over cities. China is doing the responsible thing by removing these coal power plants, as it will clean up the air and provide a safer environment for all life forms. Sign this petition and praise President Xi Jinping for closing down coal power plants.
Dear President Xi Jinping,
I am writing this letter to praise your country’s decision of shutting down four major coal power plants. As you may well know, the amount of pollution that exists in China is detrimental to the health of your citizens. Air pollution will aggravate those with asthma and can cause lung cancer. It leaves a deadly and toxic haze over your cities and prevents citizens from seeing clearly.
While your country is not looking towards renewable energy, it is a start for China to switch to other energy sources that are not as harmful. I urge your country to pursue renewable energy as the permanent solution, but I am glad that China realizes how dangerous air pollution is to the environment and its people.
