Target: François Hollande, President of France
Goal: Praise law mandating the addition of solar panels or rooftop greenery to new commercial buildings in France.
Solar panels and rooftop gardens will be added to all new buildings erected for commercial purposes in France, thanks to an inventive new decree by the French government. The legislation mandates that engineers cover all commercial district roofs at least partially with either solar panels or “green roofs” made from live shrubs, grasses, and flowers. Each option has several distinct advantages for the environment and its inhabitants, both human and animal.
Rooftop solar panels provide renewable energy, thereby decreasing reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear power, both of which are unsustainable in the long-term. The production of nuclear power results in dangerous radioactive waste that contaminates surrounding areas, while fossil fuel energy produces carbon emissions that directly contribute to climate change. Currently, solar power accounts for only one percent of the energy used in France, a number which could now climb significantly.
Rooftop gardens have an insulating effect, which will serve to decrease the amount of energy used to heat and cool buildings. They act as a filter for air, a place where birds can nest, and extra absorption of storm runoff. They also help diffuse much of the extra heat that is retained by blacktop and other building materials, reducing the urban “heat island” effect.
Climate change has been labeled the single greatest threat to the future by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, and must be addressed immediately in order to preserve the planet for future generations. Not only will this mandate help reduce pollution in France, but could set a successful model for other countries to follow. Sign the petition below to applaud France’s innovative new environmental mandate.
Dear Mr. François Hollande,
New commercial buildings in France will be required to cover a portion of their rooftops with solar panels or planted gardens thanks to a creative new decree. While solar energy panels will help reduce reliance on non-renewable nuclear and fossil fuel energy, the green roofs will filter pollution from the air, provide a refuge for birds and other wildlife, and help mitigate storm runoff.
This legislation comes at a pivotal point in civilization where we must reduce our impact on the planet or face dire consequences. The move will not only serve to help France, but presents an inventive new model for other countries to follow. We, the undersigned, praise France’s new environmental measures and encourage continued progress toward green solutions.
