Target: Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada
Goal: Wean Canada off of dirty fossil fuels completely by 2025.
The entire country of Canada could run on 100 percent renewable energy within a mere ten years if it adopted a few specific energy policies, according to a recent study. This would be a massive step forward in combating climate change. Demand that the Canadian government take measures to achieve this significant milestone.
Canada has already demonstrated a dedication to clean energy—62 percent of its electricity is currently produced with clean, sustainable technologies like solar, wind, and hydropower. According to a report recently released by 70 of the nation’s leading scientists, though, it could raise that percentage to a full 100 by as soon as 2025 if a number of key policies are adopted. Implementing a nationwide carbon tax, eliminating tax breaks and subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, integrating dirty energy industries into existing climate laws, and updating energy infrastructure are all highlighted as ways to wean the nation off of fossil fuels.
Importantly, these strategies in question are not even particularly revolutionary, and can be easily accomplished if politicians are willing to act on them. Sign the petition below to demand that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper implement these policies.
Dear Prime Minister Harper,
I am writing you today regarding the Acting on Climate Change report that was recently released by a coalition of your country’s top scientists. It outlines a number of strategies your country can implement to achieve 100 percent clean energy reliance by 2025. I urge you to use its recommendations and achieve this goal.
Climate change is a threat to us all. This year is already on track to be the hottest that we have ever experienced globally. The problem is staring us in the face, and yet too often governments fail to act on it. Well, your government has been given a clear goal and clear methods to achieve it. The report outlines a number of definite, tangible ways that you can wean your country entirely off of fossil fuels: eliminating subsidies for the fossil fuel industry, updating your energy infrastructure to get electricity from dams to where it needs to go, and imposing a national carbon tax are just a few among many attainable policy recommendations.
The important thing is that these suggestions are not radical or impossible to achieve—indeed, they’ve been on the table for quite some time, both in Canada and other countries. What is clear is just how much your country can achieve if it implements them. I urge you to adopt all the recommendations outlined in this report so that your country can be completely dirty energy-free in a mere ten years.
