Success: LGBT Discrimination Now Illegal

Target: Utah Governor, Gary Herbert

Goal: Applaud compromise between LGBT protection and religious rights.

Utah recently banned the discrimination of LGBT individuals regarding employment and housing. Religious rights are also protected, creating a balance between the two that once seemed impossible. Thank the state of Utah and Governor Gary Herbert for this historic decision that will no doubt aid in the fight for equality and protect many citizens.

In a recent petition, ForceChange called for discrimination of the LGBT community to be banned, while respectfully protecting religious rights. In part due to the efforts of ForceChange, other social activist sites, and the general public voicing their opinion, we have found great success.

Utah has long been known as a conservative state and, until recently, the LGBT community did not enjoy the same state rights as so many others. Now, LGBT residents may take solace in the fact that they can no longer face legal discrimination in the workplace or among housing opportunities. This is a huge win for the LGBT community and its allies and is in line with a nationwide push for equality.

Though critics feel legislation does not do nearly enough for either side, it is still a huge step in the right direction and must be recognized as such. Utah may now grow from the foundation legislation has built.

Applaud Governor Herbert and Utah for passing historic legislation that will significantly improve the quality of life for so many.

Dear Governor Herbert,

I know I speak on behalf of many when I tell you how pleased I am with Utah’s recent progress for the protection of the LGBT community and religious rights. Though it seems much more can be done in the fight for equality, this was a logical next step for the state of Utah. Thank you for your huge involvement in the success of banning discrimination for LGBT residents and protecting the religious rights of many.

You voiced your support of this progress long before a decision was made and I believe that played a significant role in moving forward. Your efforts, as well as those of several government officials and the citizens of Utah, do not go unnoticed.

LGBT residents of Utah no longer feel the need to hide their identity in the interest of employment opportunities, and religious institutions now have clear guidelines to follow that will eliminate any confusion between the two. Compromise is not often achieved in politics, but Utah has defied the odds.

Thank you for recent legislation that protects the rights of religious institutions and the LGBT community.
