Protect Pets from Deadly Antifreeze

Target: Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey

Goal: Don’t veto efforts to protect pets from poisonous antifreeze.

Companies producing poisonous antifreeze will be required to add a bittering agent to the chemical to prevent animals from consuming it, unless Chris Christie vetos the bill. This issue was brought up amid outcry over the poisoning of a dog named Bella. The dog drank antifreeze that was alleged to have been deliberately left out by a deranged neighbor. Her kidneys began to fail, and she had to be euthanized. Sadly, Bella’s story is not uncommon. Curious pets can be enticed by the aroma and sweet taste of antifreeze, yet the substance is horribly toxic once ingested.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, antifreeze can first cause the animal to appear groggy and disoriented. Later symptoms include vomiting and gastric ulcers. It can send the animal into kidney failure and into a coma, eventually resulting in death. Poisoning by antifreeze is a horrible way for an animal to die; there is little doubt that it is an incredibly painful experience.

Although companies that manufacture antifreeze are starting to pay attention, there is still much work to be done. We need to ensure that there are tough laws in place that require these companies to add a bittering agent to their antifreeze. This New Jersey law would fine manufacturers of antifreeze if they do not include a bittering agent. Such a law is essential since antifreeze poses an obvious public health hazard.

The bill will return to the Senate for a vote before making its way to the governor’s desk. Sign this petition to ask Governor Chris Christie to not reject this important piece of animal welfare legislation.

Dear Governor Christie,

The sweet taste of antifreeze can be enticing to both pets and children, but it is extremely toxic. The ingestion of antifreeze can lead to kidney failure, unconsciousness, and eventually death.

It’s just common sense that such a substance should be regulated. It poses an obvious public health hazard. We need to ensure that manufacturers of antifreeze are doing everything in their power to minimize the danger that their products pose to both humans and animals. Please do not veto this important piece of animal welfare legislation. Together we can make the world a little safer for our pets and children.

  1. YAH! It’s bad enough we’re STILL not ONLY using non-poisonous antifreeze, never mind that no one cares about what the usual form does to animals and kids and those who love them to pieces!

  2. Michael Guest says:

These products are very dangerous. Please understand that anti-freeze and pets don’t mix. This is a very important thing. Please don’t reject or veto this proposal.

  3. We MUST protect our animals!

  4. Tamara Heikalo says:

I don’t get why this hasn’t been attended to yet. Kerosene has an odor added to make sure you know if there is a leak. Cripes. If something is sweet, that is a sure guarantee someone or thing is going to happily have a taste. Talk about irresponsible.
