Target: New Jersey Judge Michael Hogan
Goal: Reject the corrupt pollution settlement between state administration and an oil giant.
Taxpayers will be footing the bill for Exxon Mobil’s environmental damages after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie settled the lawsuit for only $225 million, even though the lawsuit was potentially worth $9 billion according to a New York Times article.
Exxon Mobil’s contamination at two oil refineries in New Jersey left environmental advocates angry and wanting justice in the form of money to clean up their state and hold Exxon liable for damages. Unfortunately, Chris Christie’s administration crushed these hopes by settling for a minuscule amount. This leaves residents of New Jersey footing the rest of the bill while the possible presidential 2016 contender Chris Christie has a likely source of campaign contributions from Exxon.
The 1,500 acres of marshes, wetlands, and waterways contaminated by Exxon Mobil will need much more than a measly $225 million, and Exxon Mobil is more than capable of paying above this amount. These kinds of politically corrupt deals are a huge disservice to the people of New Jersey and anyone who cares at all about the environment. Chris Christie is abusing his power as governor and only thinks in terms of what will get him more power.
The New Jersey Senate passed a resolution after hearing about this despicable settlement that urges Judge Michael Hogan to reject the settlement, but more voices need to be heard. Please add your voice and sign the petition below and make Exxon Mobil pay a just amount for their damages to the environment.
Dear Honorable Judge Michael Hogan,
I am writing to you in regards to the settlement between Chris Christie’s administration and Exxon Mobil. As someone who cares about the environmental and fairness in government, this is deeply upsetting.
This settlement is worth up to $9 billion and Chris Christie is only settling for $225 million. If he truly cared at all about New Jersey, he would settle for much more, but he is only thinking about a 2016 election and his shot at becoming the president. This kind of corrupt dealing needs to be stopped in its tracks.
Please do the honorable thing and reject this settlement. People everywhere and especially the people of New Jersey will deeply appreciate the rejection, as it will present another opportunity to reach a fair and non-corrupt settlement.
