Target: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
Goal: Stop the attempt to force anti-abortion legislation into efforts to fight human trafficking.
U.S. Republicans are trying to hijack efforts to help victims of human trafficking in order to restrict abortion rights. They slipped anti-abortion language into the proposed Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act and are now insisting that this corrupted bill now be put for a vote or they won’t confirm Loretta Lynch as attorney general.
Democrats stalled the human trafficking bill after accusing Republicans of sneaking in language that would extend an act that bars the use of taxpayer funds for abortion-related services. Now, of course, the same Republicans are refusing to change the language of the bill and are insisting that it be voted on as-is. Additionally, they are once again using obstructionist politics to prevent the confirmation for a key government position.
This bill should not be about anything other than giving justice to the victims of human trafficking. Plus, only the most absurdly anti-choice individuals would want to deny the right of bodily autonomy to those who had been subjected to sex slavery.
Republicans are hurting victims of human trafficking by toying with a bill that would increase punishments for the crime. Every day, hundreds of thousands of women and children are exploited in the most horrific manner, but these politicians would rather take the opportunity to restrict the human right of abortion access than allow a bill that would help curb this practice to go through unimpeded. Sign this petition to demand that the anti-choice language be removed so that the bill can be passed as soon as possible.
Dear Senator McConnell,
Your Senate Republicans are currently trying to force a bill through which you hijacked to promote your anti-abortion agenda. Though this bill was originally a no-brainer, as it was designed simply to give justice to victims of human trafficking, you slipped in language that would extend the prohibition against using taxpayer funds for abortion.
The fact that you would use a bill meant to help the victims of such a horrific crime is disgusting. Did it not occur to you that human trafficking victims might need abortion services after being raped several times a day for years on end, or did you just not care? You could have created a bill to extend the Hyde Amendment separately, but instead you decided to corrupt something that was supposed to be about helping exploited women and children. Now you’re trying to force the act through by holding the confirmation of the new attorney general hostage.
This kind of politics that exploits the already horrifically exploited is the reason why so many have lost faith in our government. This bill should have passed easily and never should have been toyed with for the sake of a separate agenda. I demand that you immediate move to redact the anti-abortion language from the bill and pass it as it was intended to be so that human trafficking victims can get the justice they deserve.
