Target: Fashion Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana
Goal: Protest Dolce & Gabbana’s statements on non-traditional families and same-sex parenting.
Fashion icons Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana made controversial remarks recently by saying that traditional families were the only “real” families and that children from same-sex parenting and in vitro fertilization were “synthetic.”
Their fashion label Dolce & Gabbana is widely popular, despite many knowing their stance on gay marriage. While they have made remarks in the past criticizing same-sex marriage, they have only recently begun attacking same-sex parenting. Panorama magazine interviewed the fashion icons, in which Domenico Dolce said, “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteri [for] rent, semen chosen from a catalog.” They go on to make remarks such as “the only family is the traditional one.”
Both gay and straight couples have expressed outrage at the comments, and rightly so. Calling children from same-sex parents or those who need the aid of in vitro fertilization (IVF) to have kids “synthetic” is extremely judgmental. Dolce and Gabbana are gay themselves, but that does not give them a pass for making such remarks that are hurtful toward these children and their families.
No family is more legitimate than another based on whether they come from a same-sex couple or not. Additionally, those who struggle to have children and need IVF to have them does not make their children “synthetic.” They are as real as any other child.
All these remarks do is incite hatred and give bullies more ammo for the children of same-sex parents and IVF parents. Please protest these insulting remarks by Dolce and Gabbana by signing the petition below.
Dear Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana,
I am deeply saddened to hear about your recent comments regarding non-traditional families such as same-sex parents and those who conceive through in vitro fertilization. These narrow views are incredibly hurtful towards these families and those that love them.
While I understand that they are your views and you have every right to them, you must realize that these comments only spur more people to not accept the legitimacy of such families and open them up to further bullying. In a world with so much hate in it, we must be careful to not spread more.
I am sorry you feel this way and I hope you will change your views to reflect a more accepting society. These children are in no way “synthetic” as you described them, and I cannot support Dolce & Gabbana while your views are so out of touch and judgmental of these children and their families.
