Target: Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan
Goal: Ensure that attackers of young girl are properly punished.
Taliban members were arrested in Pakistan for attacking Malala Yousafzai, a teenage activist who campaigns for freedom of education. According to an article in Time, the Taliban militants were apprehended by Pakistani authorities after approximately two years of being on the run. Yousafzai is world famous for being an outspoken advocate of women’s rights and education. In 2012, she was critically wounded when Islamic militants shot her in the head.
An article in The Christian Science Monitor recounts the incident, where Taliban militants stopped a bus full of schoolgirls. One of the men announced to the bus: “Which one of you is Malala? Speak up, otherwise I will shoot you all. She is propagating against the soldiers of Allah, the Taliban. She must be punished.” The man then shot her in the head at point blank range. Doctors removed bullets from her head and neck, but miraculously, she has experienced a successful recovery. Malala now resides in the U.K., and she cannot return to her home in Pakistan due to concerns for her safety.
This case has revealed what Islamic militants are most afraid of: peaceful young girls with big ideas. Sign this petition to demand that Pakistani officials give these men the harshest punishment under the law.
Dear Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif,
I want to urge you to push for the harshest possible sentences for the attackers of Malala Yousafzai, a young education activist who was shot in 2012. These cruel men were recently captured, and I want to express my hope that Pakistan will make an example of them. As you know, Malala was on a bus of schoolgirls when Taliban militants stopped them and shot Malala in the head. She was subsequently rushed to the hospital, where doctors removed bullets from her head and neck. She has experienced a full recovery, and stands as an inspiration to everyone who values free-thought.
This act of shooting a child in the head because she was advocating education represents one of the most heinous violations imaginable. Every child should have the right to go to school and receive a fulfilling education without living in fear of cowards who would stoop so low as to attempt to kill children.
The men responsible should never see freedom again, and I trust that you will do everything in your power to ensure this. Together we can work to ensure that all children receive an education free from the threat of violence.
