Target: Secretary General of UN, Ban Ki-moon
Goal: Demand justice for the 13,000 Syrians who have been tortured and killed in government prisons.
A UK-based human rights group claims that thousands of Syrians, including children, are being held captive and tortured until they are eventually killed. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights recently said that almost 13,000 Syrians, including 108 children, have been subjected to torture and have died as a result. According to a 2013 Human Rights Watch report, the prisoners are beat with batons and metal rods while hanging by their wrists from the ceiling. Another report released shortly after claims that the detainees are also raped and sexually abused.
The head of the rights group also released a statement claiming that the government had been forcing the families of those who have been killed to sign a statement agreeing that their loved ones were killed by rebels. They have been actively trying to cover up the atrocities that are taking place at the detention centers. Meanwhile, thousands of people in Syria have reported family members, and even children, as missing.
According to Al Jazeera, approximately 200,000 people have been arrested by the government since the conflict in Syria began. Thousands of people are being taken away from their families, many of whom will never return. There are an additional 20,000 detainees who have disappeared in government prisons and they have likely suffered the same fate as the others who have died since the conflict started in 2011.
The unmeasurable human rights violations reported should warrant a response and outside help. Sign the petition below to demand justice for the victims of the ongoing conflict in Syria.
Dear Secretary General of UN, Ban Ki-moon,
The accusations made by the UK-based rights group regarding the torture and deaths of almost 13,000 people are disturbing, but easy to believe as so many Syrians have been reported missing. The people of Syria deserve justice and the reported number of deaths and missing people should not be overlooked.
These people are being punished based on their involvement with anti-government demonstrations, but many are killed based on mere assumptions. Thousands of innocent people have died without any chance at proving that they weren’t involved with the uprising. The entire country has been completely destroyed by the violence and more civilians will continue to die unless you intervene.
The conflict in Syria is worsening and will likely not improve without outside intervention. I urge you to conduct a thorough investigation and seek justice for the families of the missing people.
