Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Build vital infrastructure for wind energy production.
A lack of sufficient infrastructure is preventing the United States from getting at least one-third of its electricity from clean wind energy instead of from dirty fossil fuels. Given the urgency of climate change, slowly updating our infrastructure is not a luxury we can afford. Demand that President Obama launch an effort to dramatically increase the country’s clean energy infrastructure.
According to a recent report released by the Department of Energy, the United States could get at least 35 percent of its electricity from clean, sustainable wind energy by 2050. While the most obvious way to achieve this goal is by giving the wind energy industry the same tax benefits the government gives the fossil fuel industry, the Republican-controlled Congress has made that impossible by repeatedly voting down such benefits.
An alternative method of achieving this goal, however, is by bypassing Congress’ tax powers altogether and targeting energy infrastructure itself. The goal of 35 percent-reliance on clean wind energy by 2050 can, according to the report, be achieved if at least 900 miles of transmission lines are built annually over the next 35 years. When considered on a national scale, 900 miles is an easily achievable number.
Such a project would prepare America for a much-needed clean energy future. Sign the petition below to demand that President Obama launch an effort to build enough new energy infrastructure to meet this required annual rate.
Dear President Obama,
I am writing you today regarding the recent wind energy report released by the Department of Energy. According to that report, the United States could potentially receive at least 35 percent of its energy from clean wind power by 2050. This is a target that we should do everything in our power to reach.
While the report highlights tax benefits as the best way to achieve this goal, political realities in Congress make granting those tax benefits virtually impossible. To consider the effort entirely hopeless because of that, though, would be uncreative. The report also states that the same goal can be reached by building more necessary infrastructure to deliver the energy created by wind farms to consumers.
Nine-hundred miles of transmission lines would need to be built every year until 2050 to get our reliance up to 35 percent, but we could easily exceed that rate of infrastructure creation nationwide if we pursue this path in earnest. Not only would we be preparing our country for a cleaner-energy future, but we would be creating thousands of jobs at the same time.
In the absence of tax benefits to the wind industry, building this infrastructure is what should be focused on. We need to stop using so much dirty energy, and solutions like wind energy are available and waiting for us. I urge you to launch an effort to build national clean energy infrastructure at the required rate specified by the Department of Energy report so that we can maximize our use of clean wind energy by 2050.
