Target: Tampa Bay State Attorney – Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, Mark Ober
Goal: Fully prosecute men accused of shooting dog and then tying her to railroad tracks.
Tampa Bay police have arrested four young men in connection with a dog that was found tied to an active railroad track with bullet wounds. The pit bull, now named Cabela, was originally purchased as a fighting dog. When the men found the dog’s fighting skills to be lacking, they allegedly took her to the woods and shot her in the shoulder and neck in an attempt to euthanize her. Badly injured, the loyal dog actually made her way back home, only to reportedly be taken to a nearby railroad track by frustrated owners who attached the animal to the track and left her to die.
Luckily, police officers responding to a call in the neighborhood stumbled upon Cabela before she could be run over. They immediately took her to an emergency services veterinary clinic, where she had surgery on her wounds as well as a broken leg. Cabela was kept heavily medicated for days in order to help her overcome her injuries, which would likely have been fatal had she been left outside overnight. While the dog is expected to live, veterinarians may be forced to amputate her injured leg if it does not heal properly.
Police were able to obtain security footage from a nearby camera, with one officer luckily recognizing one of the suspects from a previous encounter. Upon entering the suspect’s home, police allegedly found two more pit bulls with injuries consistent with dog fighting. The two men in the home were both charged with two counts each of possessing a dog for dog fighting, each charge with a possible penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Later in the week, two more teens were arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, armed trespassing, and possession of a firearm.
These crimes shocked the surrounding community because of the clear malicious nature. So far, the veterinary hospital where the dog is being kept has received several offers to adopt the dog should she recover. Sign the petition below to demand the cruel abusers of this innocent dog face justice.
Dear Mark Ober,
Tampa police recently rescued a pit bull, named Cabela, from certain death. The dog was allegedly shot in the shoulder and neck by her owners, who did not want her because she was not a good fighting dog. When the dog found its way back home, the owners reportedly took her to a train track and tied her there, leaving her to be run over.
Four men were quickly apprehended in connection with the crime, with charges of possessing a dog for dog fighting, aggravated animal cruelty, armed trespassing, and possession of a firearm laid. We, the undersigned, ask that the accused abusers be fully prosecuted under the law.
